Ak Bars Kazan secure spot with win; Barys Astana, Metallurg Magnitogorsk in with Admiral Vladivostok loss.
Ak Bars Kazan hit 89 points and secured a playoff spot with a 2-1 win over Severstal. The game was closely fought and it was not until the final five minutes of the game before Ak Bars was able to secure the win. Janne Pesonen scored the game winning goal to punch Kazan's ticket for the Gagarin Cup playoffs.
Barys Astana and Metallurg Magnitogorsk both had the day off. However, credit to Lev Praha for defeating Admiral Vladivostok 4-1. The loss made it impossible for Barys or Metallurg Mg to slip out of the playoffs regardless of their effort in their final ten matches. However, the three newly minted playoff teams still have to duke out which club will have the higher seed. Barys Astana is basically guaranteed no less than the East's 2nd seed, but Ak Bars and Metallurg are divisional opponents and one of those two clubs will likely finish with the third seed. Metallurg has the inside track at taking the division--they are behind Ak Bars by one point, but they have played one less game.
David Ullstrom and Justin Azevedo each had a goal and assist in the win over Admiral. Lev Praha is thrid in the Western Conference with 80 points after this win. Vladivostok is fighting for their playoff lives, sitting with 59 points in the ninth position.
