According to Bavarian media Bernie Englbrecht, assistant coach of DEL team Straubing Tigers, was involved in a fight prior to the 2-0 road win against EHC Red Bull München on Sunday. The 56 year old former German national team goalie who participated in two Olympic Winter Games for his country is said to have entered the parking lot of the Olympia-Eissporthalle with the private car of a Tigers player and used the parking space reserved for the referees. This led to a verbal argument between Englbrecht and a 70 year old security man. Witnesses saw how the assistant coach beat the other man twice in the face but Englbrecht claimed to have been beaten aswell. Both men filed a charge for assault according to police sources in Munich.

As a consequence of the attack the security man had to leave the arena during the game and was treated in a local hospital. He suffered a bleeding lip and a dangerous larynx injury but could leave the hospital later on Sunday.

Englbrecht has a history of violence which earned him the nickname "Psycho". In 2003 when he was coaching Landshut he hit a referee with a water bottle and was banned for several months. During the 2007-2008 season he only was head coach of the team in Munich for nine games before he was fired for damaging the reputation of the club with his behaviour.

DEL manager Jörg von Ameln said: "We heared of the incident and started our own investigations. In any case we will wait for the result of the police work. Should it turn out that the incident happened the way as told by the police, we will punish this behaviour. We can't accept something like this from team officials."
