With a 5:2 win at home, Kloten demonstrates that last game was a fluke
The 4th game in Kloten started with a small handful of chances on both
sides but Benjamin Conz and Martin Gerber both had no problems to keep their goals clean. With 8
minutes played Michael Ngoy was benched for Hooking and only seconds
later Timo Helbling joined him for cross checking. It only took the
Flyers 18 seconds to profit from the two-man advantage as Top Scorer
Peter Mueller scored the first goal of the game and the first after 450 goalless minutes from a sharp left angle,
assisted by Patrick von Gunten and Matthias Bieber. But through a quick
breakaway Fribourgs Andrey Bykow, was able to fire a shot at Gerber, the
puck went off the post, rebounded on Gerber's skates and rolled over the
goal line. Kloten now seemed nervous and unorganised, many passes in
their own zone were unprecise and at times they were lucky to even build
up their attacking formation and enter the offfensive zone. With a bit
more than a minute to go the Flyers for once were able to settle in
Fribourgs zone when Micki Dupont aimed a shot at Conz. The goalie
couldn't get the puck under control completely and had to watch how the
puck rolled over the line.
Whatever Coach Felix Hollenstein had told his team during the break,
Kloten started furious, created chances, and forced Gottéron to make
mistakes. 3 minutes into the second period, Blum curved around the
Fribourg goal and gave a pass to Janick Steinmann who stood perfect next to
the post and got the puck past Conz. This goal seemed to have given the
Flyers a boost, they were now in better control of the puck and creating
better chances. Victor Stancescu was then sent to the bench for High
sticking but within the next few seconds a scene from the first period
repeated itself when the boxplaying team was on a breakaway and scored a
goal. Tommi Santala was awarded the goal. The Flyers survived the
boxplay by blocking shots and creating pressure on the attacking
Fribourg players. A next chance to better up their boxplay came with a
minor penalty for Michael Liniger for Holding the stick and again
Gottéron didn't find the adequate way to score their first goal of the
second period. 36 minutes were played when the Flyers got their chance
to play with a one-man advantage and created some good chances but
couldn't add another goal. Sebastien Schilt was then sent to the bench
for Obstruction but before the powerplay was over, the 2nd period ended.
With the start of the 3rd period, Kloten continued where they had ended
the 2nd period, with strong forechecking and good chances, 56 seconds
were played when Simon Bodenmann and Janick Steinmann assisted Michael
Liniger on his goal. This was the decision in the game, as Fribourg
replaced Conz through Kevin Huber and Christian Dubé was sen to the
cooler for Slashing and a minute later Alain Birbaum assisted him for
boarding but Fribourg also, proved that their boxplay was in a good
shape. With the minutes passing by, Kloten kept up the pace but more
importantly, kept the puck under control. Both teams each received a
minor penalty, first it was von Gunten for crosschecking, seconds later
Julien Sprunger also for crosschecking sat down but with no consequences on the scoreboard. 13 minutes were played when the Dragons settled in
Klotens zone and Nicklas Hagman scored the second goal for Fribourg with
a nice slapshot assisted by Kwiatkowski and Christian Dubé. The last
minutes were played down and with 9 seconds left, the fans even got some
spectacle for their money as James Vandermeer and John Fritsche started
their own little fight with Vandermeer leaving the ice with a technical
KO win. Both players were benched for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Kloten
now has a first match puck this coming Saturday in Fribourg and can
advance to the final for the first time since 2011.
