The team was founded in 2006 and originally played in the America East Hockey League before moving to the New England Division of the IJHL's Super Elite League. The team was sold in 2010,and did not play in the 2010-2011 season. The team's home rink collapsed in March 2011, and therefore did not play in the 2011-2012 season. The Moose played their first home game in two years on October 19, 2012, and joined the NSHL as a full member for the 2013-14 season.
In Spring 2014, the Maine Moose franchise was sold to Jeff Dupere and renamed the Maine Timberwolves. The team also announced a relocation to China Village, Maine.

Team folded in September 2014 after have been suspended by the Northern States Junior Hockey League for failing to meet its financial obligations to the league.
