Linköping wins Swedish women’s championship
20 Mar 2014 | Henrik Lundqvist
When Linköping got a 2-man advantage in the opening of the overtime of the Swedish women's final, nothing could stop them. Canadian star Bailey Bram got the winning goal at 61:06.
In front of 3,449 spectators in Fjällräven Center in Örnsköldsvik, Linköping's women won their first ever Swedish Championship. A strange move by the MODO staff decided the game. After a call against MODO late in the third period Linköping was supposed to start the overtime with one more player on the ice. During the intermission MODO's coach Mikael Nilsson decided to request a measurement of Kim Martin's goalie mask hoping it was illegal. The mask was ok and MODO got another penalty to start the overtime with two players less. It resulted in a deciding goal for Linköping.
Bailey Bram picked up a rebound on the right side of MODO's goalie Valentina Lizana Wallner and buried the winner.
Swiss national team player Stefanie Marty opened the scoring at 30:50 to give the visitors from Linköping the lead. Maria Lindh replied twice to take MODO ahead before the second period was over. Emma Holmbom tied the game at two early in the third period and the game had to be decided in overtime.
3,449 is a new attendance record for Swedish women's hockey.
