Today, on the last day of the World Championship Division 1A, Slovenia and Austria secured the first two spots that earn them promotion to next season's elite division. Japan was close. Had they won the shoot-out against Hungary it would have been enough.
Since Japan lost the shootout game to Hungary Austria knew already before the game against Slovenia that they had won promotion. Slovenia on the other hand needed at least two points to surpass Japan. They got three as they beat Austria 3-1.
Jan Urbas scored two of the Slovenian goals: "It feels great. It’s been a tough game and tournament. We called the last games quarter-final, semi-final and this was our gold medal game and luckily it ended up well. We deserve what we achieved," he tells IIHF.com.
Japan suffered a tough loss to Hungary. The Asian top nation was in the lead three times but every time the Hungarian team caught up with them. The last equalizer for 4-4 was scored by Marton Vas just 1:06 before the end of regulation. Vas also scored the shootout winner.
Ukraine ended the tournament with a solid 8-2 win over the host Korea, but it was only enough for a fourth spot in the final standings. Korea relegate after five losses.
