Kärpät Oulu wins Finnish Championship
26 Apr 2014 | Markus Nisius
Kärpät beats Tappara 1-0 in overtime to win its 6th championship. Juhamatti Aaltonen scores the game winner.
Everybody who expected an offensive battle in the last
decisive game got disappointed, but of course in a Game 7 for the Championship
everything that counts is the win. And so both teams focused on defense.
Tappara couldn’t even get more than 6 shots on Tomi Karhunen’s goal in the
first 2 periods. In contrast to that Oulu looked like a dominating team with
only 16 shots themselves in the same time frame.
In the last period the intensity got higher and penalties
started coming, but without any effect to the scoreboard. And so the game went scoreless
into overtime.
After 67:24 minutes finally someone scored not only the
first goal of this game, but also the last goal of the season. Juhamatti
Aaltonen emerged as the hero of Oulu, who could turn around a 1-3 series
deficit in the last three games. This leaves Tappara empty handed.
It is the 6th championship for Oulu and the first since
2008.
