EIHL update
Coventry appoint new coach. Panthers go top of the standings
Coventry appoint Weber as new coach
Coventry Blaze confirm that American, Chuck Weber has been named as their new head coach. The 41-year old New York native signs up to the EIHL club until the end of the season.
Weber, who won the IHL Turner Cup in 2000/01 as an assistant coach, had been working in the KHL with Medvescak Zagreb as their head coach until he parted ways with the organisation in October 2014.
Coventry's director of hockey, James Pease said:
"Chuck has had a fantastic ECHL and AHL coaching career, winning the Kelly Cup Twice. He has generally stayed with organisations for a few years where has has put structures in place to improve and make them better and that is what we know he can do with the Blaze."
The club are not naïve and understand that Weber may not be with the English club come next season and Pease believes that he may well be poached by other leagues in Europe and North America.
"We will utilise his experience and knowledge to the maximum while he is here. We are very lucky to have him and it is a fantastic opportunity for us to learn from him as we strive to get this club challenging for trophies again." - James Pease.
Panthers go top of the standings with win over Coventry
The Nottingham Panthers gave up just the one goal in six periods of hockey over a four point weekend and moved to the top of the EIHL.
The only downside to the weekend were injuries to Greg Jacina and Chris Lawrence but the Panther's head coach Corey Neilson was pleased with their defensive display against Coventrey who had blown five goals past Sheffield inon Saturday.
The Panthers took the lead within the first minute against the Coventry Blaze and went on to record a 3-1 win on Sunday night.
Saturday night, Nottingham travelled to Hull to play the Stingrays. Goaltender Mattias Modig marked his return to the Nottingham side with a 23 shot shut-out in a game where the Panthers ran out with a 4-0 victory.
Steelers succumb to Giants in a shoot-out loss
With only 30 seconds remaining in the final period, Giants forward, Mike Kompon scored to tie up the game on Sunday night. Kompon then went on to inflict more pain on the Yorkshire club by scoring the winning penalty shot to gift the victory to the reigning champions.
The Giants jumped out to a 2-0 lead after a goalless first period. The Steelers hit back with three unanswered goals until Kompon tied it all up in the dying seconds of the game.
"I thought we played well for the most part and did enough to win the game. Te players have to realise that this is how hard you have to play every night. It's frustrating that we didn't get the 2 points after being so close." - Gerard Adams, Sheffield Steelers' head coach.
Blaze sign Frischmon from Mora IK
Coventry Blaze confirm the signing of former NHL forward Trevor Frischmon.
The former Columbus Blue Jacket has been applying his trade for Mora IK in the Swedish Allsvenskan league this season and has made 22 appearances.
The 33-year old is a former team mate of the Blaze's interim coach Steven Goertzen, having played together at Syracuse Crunch and Springfield Falcons in the AHL.
Frischmon will likely make his debut against the Hull Stingrays on Saturday. Meanwhile, Blaze bid farewell to Candian forward Kyle Bochek who has been released to make way for Frischmon.
