Canada demolishes Germany
The favourite for the gold medal stayed perfect against Germany, smoking them with a clear 10:0 victory.
Germany had
a good start and also had the first chance of the game, created by a drop pass of Matthias Plachta, but LA
Kings-goalkeeper Martin Jones denied Thomas
Oppenheimer.
It took
Canada nine minutes for the first real scoring chance, but proved their
qualities capitalizing on every opportunity they got. Being down a man is no problem for Team Canada, so Ryan O’Reilly on the odd man rush served
Sidney Crosby for the go-ahead-goal.
23 seconds later the Oiler’s duo Jordan
Eberle and Taylor Hall gave
Canada the two-goal-lead. Plachta had a good chance for Germany, but it was
again Canada to score. Ryan O’Reilly stole the puck behind the opposing net,
gave it to Cody Eakins, who increased
Canada's lead. With 11 seconds to go in the first frame Eakins would add one
more to make it 4-0 after 20 minutes of play.
Taylor Hall
and Aaron Ekblad scored two more in
the first four minutes of the second period, resulting in a goalie change for Germany.
Dennis Endras, who though could not
really be blamed for the score, was pulled by coach Pat Cortina and Danny aus den Birken got between the pipes.
Canadian
head coach Todd McLellan saw his
team continuing to dominate the game, as Claude
Giroux (28th minute) and Tyler Ennis (36th) sniped
home two more, before Taylor Hall completed his hat trick (40th).
In the
final period the Canadians finally showed some mercy and only scored their
tenth goal. Matt Duchene scored on
the penalty shot with a smooth move to beat the german netminder on the five
hole.
The Germans
tried to score at least one goal, but also Tobias
Rieder, the only NHL-player on the roster, was not able to beat
Martin Jones, who could celebrate a shutout in his first appearance for the
Canadian national team.
The next game
will be a challenge for both teams, as Germany will face neighbour Switzerland
and Canada will be tested by Jaromir Jagr and the host
nation on Monday.
