The Finnish league just announced that Jukurit Mikkeli will be joining the elite level as from the season 2016/17. The reigning Mestis champion will only have to raise its budget.
After adding two teams in the last two years, there will be one more coming next year, which will finally expand the total count of teams in Liiga to 16. It has been officially announced that from next season on Jukurit Mikkeli will be a part of the premier level in Finland.
Jukurit won 6 Mestis championships in the last 15 years and proved already that they are a strong competitor on the ice. However, there is a gap between first and second division, which is why the only condition for Mikkeli is to raise its budget to an appropriate level until next summer and also sign some players for the new level.
These players will be coached by Risto Dufva and Ville Nieminen. Dufva is currently coaching Lukko Rauma and hopes to go for the championship there.
