Flyers earn 3 points after slow start against Servette

At times it was tough to watch but the home team showed that they have learned from the past weeks. Kloten didn't fold after the first goal and returned to the winning street. After the game, head coach Simpson informed the Flyers had acquired a new winger for the remainder of the season.

The start of the game was nothing for the action-hungry fan. It took 15 minutes and the help of Martin Gerber to give Servette the first goal of the game. Gerber's intention to clear the puck completely failed as he passed the puck to to newly acquired Jim Slater who just passed the puck back to the crease where it deflected off Gerber's pad and crossed the goal line.

A little less than 3 minutes were on the clock when Adam Hasani had a chance to score the equalizer and somehow worked the puck into the goal. The Referees wanted to review the goal as it seemed Mayer in goal for Geneva had been obstructed but just seconds later the refs confirmed.

For the start of the middle period, the Flyers had decided to switch into a higher gear and promptly scored the second goal when Casutt beat Mayer in the 25th minute. The rest of the period both teams slowed back down to the tempo they had begun with. The Flyers were given a powerplay chance with 2 minutes left but poor passing and executing skills brought an end to the second period.hkjil

Midway through the final period nothing much had changed, the pace was average at best. Both teams were trying to score the next goal but for some reason skills and precision weren't king tonight. As the game was coming to an end, Steve Kellenberger was on a break-away and beat Mayer with a slapshot from the right circle to make it 3:1. This probably wasn't the most attractive game of the season but the Flyers earned it by outworking the romands. Servette remains outside of the top eight while Kloten pass Geneva and Lugano and take the 6th spot. In light of the win, the Flyers announced that James Sheppard has been signed for the rest of the season as an additional forward. He previously played with the New York Rangers but didn't get a new contract for the current season.

"It was a tough game tonight and it's always hard to beat Geneva but we're happy about the 3 points", coach Sean Simpson told the media. Mark Olver was on injured reserved and it's unclear when he'll return to the ice, he continued. Asked about James Sheppard: "He's tall, a strong winger who's played many games in the NHL in Minnesota and New York, I expect him to fill in the role of a leader. He was with the Columbus Blue Jackets training camp until this Monday so he's in a good shape." Finishing the media session he also said that it was in his teams favour that the last 3 weeks didn't see game action on Tuesdays due to the Champions Hockey League and Swiss League Cup. "It's good for us to have not played those games, we needed the breaks as the next few weeks will be tough."
