Founded as Broome County Barons in the Federal Hockey League based in Chenango, New York. They began play on October 28, 2010, the inaugural game for the FHL's inaugural 2010-11 season, home games were played at the Chenango Ice Rink.
As of December 17th, 2010, The Broome County Barons have ceased operations due to lack of fan support, and have relocated to Cape Cod where they will be known as the Cape Cod Baron. The Cape Cod Bluefins were a result of a market study conducted by the Federal Hockey League during the end of the 2010-2011 regular season when they relocated the Broome County Barons to Cape Cod. The Barons franchise was owned by the Commissioner of the FHL, Don Kirnan.
On March 3, 2011 the Federal Hockey League franchise rights for Cape Cod were transferred to the Cape Cod Hockey Development Foundation.
On December 16, 2012, it was announced that the Bluefins were immediately moving to central New York and taking on the name "New York Bluefins"playing their home games in Syracuse, New York
For the 2012-13 season, home games were scheduled to be played at a number of rinks throughout the Cape including ice arenas in Hyannis, Orleans, Falmouth, Bourne, and Martha's Vineyard. The team stopped playing home games in late November 2012.
On December 16, 2012, it was announced that the Bluefins were immediately moving to central New York and taking on the name "New York Bluefins" and attempted to play limited home games in Cortland, New York at the McDonald Sports Complex.
