A late Darcy Murphy goal saw Belfast snatch a regulation win over Coventry by the odd goal in eleven.
A beautiful move from Jonathan Ferland put the Giants ahead shorthanded, cutting in from the wing and pulling a move on Matt Hackett for 1-0 at 8:27. Patrick Dwyer doubled the home side’s lead at 11:08, and when Kendall McFaull’s shot from a very tight angle found its way through, the Giants led by three after only 16 minutes.
Coventry got the best possible start to period two with Ben Lake’s wrist shot from the slot finding the net with 3:11 gone – extending his point-streak to 14 games. The Giants responded however with a smart powerplay goal from Dustin Johner, batting the puck in after Darcy Murphy’s shot hit the post. At that point the Giants looked to be comfortable going back three ahead, but Coventry were having none of it. Alex Nikiforuk was the recipient of a fortunate bounce to tap home at the back post with 32:33 on the clock, then just over a minute later Shawn Pauley was teed up by Lake to pull the Blaze back to within one. Pauly then brought the visitors level with 1:33 left in the period, scoring on the powerplay with a wrist shot that Beskorowany should probably have done better with.
The Blaze then stunned the majority of the fans in the SSE as a 2-on-0 allowed Ross Venus in to score shorthanded just before the 50-minute mark. Josh Roach hit back for the Giants on the powerplay at 51:37 to keep his own points streak going, before a super move from Murphy allowed him to slot past Hackett and take the win with 1:28 left in the game – and reduce the gap behind Cardiff at the top to three points.
