Goals and assists
Sheffield could have a huge say in the title race this weekend facing both of the top two, and started by handing advantage to Cardiff as they beat Belfast by three goals at the Fly DSA Arena.
It took a little bit of magic from Darcy Murphy to open the scoring in the latter half of the opening period – two Sheffield defensemen not able to find the puck, allowing the Giants’ forward to dangle through and fire high over Jackson Whistle at 14:23. The Steelers however had created some decent chances in the first and would have felt going in tied after 20 minutes was a fair reflection of the game – the equaliser when it came was a speculative shot from John Armstrong from the wing that caught Tyler Beskorowany off guard with three minutes left in the period.
The lone goal of the middle period came at 28:43 – a fantastic pass from Armstrong through the middle of the zone found Ryan Martinelli rushing in alone at the back post to slide under Beskorowany.
At 2-1 the next goal in the game was always going to be crucial, and when it went to the Steelers the Giants had a mountain to climb. Anthony DeLuca was the scorer at 52:32 leaving the visitors with a little over seven minutes to get themselves back level. That didn’t happen though; despite pulled the goalie Adam Keefe could only watch on as his side conceded on the empty net – Eric Neiley beating out an icing call to set up Jonas Westerling for the simple finish and a 4-1 win.
Aside from the impact of the result at the top, Sheffield extended the gap between themselves and the playoff chasers to six points.
