ans in Belfast got their money’s worth this weekend. After 11 goals last night, tonight they were treated to 13 as the Giants got the better of Nottingham Panthers.
Kyle Baun and Darcy Murphy had the Giants two up in just over seven minutes at the SSE Arena, but the Giants have not held leads well this weekend. It was not so surprising when the Panthers hit back with two goals in 50 seconds from Tommy Hughes and Chris Stewart to the level the game – four goals in just over nine minutes.
There were more to come however, the Giants this time re-gaining their two-goal cushion inside 31 seconds as Baun and Murphy again found the net. Robert Farmer pulled one back for the Panthers with 11 seconds left in the period.
It was four each with just under five minutes played in the middle period thanks to Jon Rheault in what proved to be the only goal of period two. The teams were however ready to light the lamp again in the third – 41 seconds needed for Dustin Johner to put Belfast back ahead.
Johner made it a hat-trick at 53:11 to give the Giants a two goal lead again, but the drama wasn’t over just yet. The Panthers pulled it back to 6-5 with their net empty through Brett Perlini, before Kyle Baun then struck at the other end to make it 7-5. With 55 seconds left in the game Jordan Smotherman marked his Giants’ debut with a goal to round off an 8-5 win.
