Goals and assists
A spirited Manchester Storm side went down in the end by three goals in Belfast, but pushed the Giants all the way at the SSE Arena.
The opening period was a well-contested affair with both teams having some decent chances. Unfortunately for the Storm, both of the Giants’ goals went in off their sticks – the first was at 9:51, Blair Riley’s pass across the front of the crease being tipped in by Riley Stadel as he attempted to intercept. With ten seconds to go in the period, a high puck rebounding off Matt Ginn was tipped into the goal by Shane Bakker as he tried to stop it heading goal-wards.
6:20 into period two Manchester were back in the game however, Dane Byers bundling a puck over the goal line that was given after video review despite the best efforts of Tyler Beskorowany to block it along the post. The home side went back two ahead at 47:34, another loose puck was picked up by David Rutherford this time who waited for Ginn to commit and then backhanded high into the net. Credit the Storm again who reused to lay down and brought themselves back to within one, Linden Springer’s wrist-shot through traffic beating Beskorowany at 48:54 for 3-2.
The Giants made the game safe with 1:54 to go, Chris Higgins’ inch-perfect pass for Dustin Johner allowed the forward to shoot high over Ginn and put the Giants back two ahead. Baun then unselfishly passed to Higgins with 25 seconds remaining to seal the empty net goal and a 5-2 win.
