Games between the Giants and Steelers have been excellent so far this season, and tonight was no exception as the two sides played out a well-contested battle in Belfast.
While the Giants had the better of the early chances, Sheffield were to head in to the first break up by a pair – John Armstrong converted from the edge of the circle on a great pass from Ben O’Connor to put the visitors ahead, then Anthony DeLuca continued his excellent scoring record of late from an almost identical position to make it two with 16:31 played.
Belfast needed nearly half of the game to finally get on the board, Curtis Leonard pulling one back for his side with 29:52 on the clock. Kyle Baun then hit the equaliser just over three minutes later, but the Steelers would lead after 40 minutes thanks to Jordan Owens’ go-ahead goal at 33:47.
David Rutherford gave us a tied game with a little over two minutes played at the start of the third, before the teams traded chances to take the lead. This time however it would be the Giants who went ahead as Blair Riley’s shot bounced in off O’Connor’s skate with 4:55 to play. On a late powerplay, and with Jackson Whistle pulled, Robert Dowd fired home a bouncing puck after Justin Buzzeo’s shot was parried by Berkorowany to tie things up with 73 seconds remaining.
3-on-3 overtime saw the Giants with the better scoring opportunities, and 3:06 in to the extra period Patrick Dwyer converted to get the Giants the extra point.
