After the drama of the two sides’ meeting some 20 hours earlier, Belfast and Sheffield stepped out at the SSE Arena to do it all again tonight.
Belfast were in the lead after the first period, Patrick Dwyer’s goal 14:11 into the game putting them ahead.
The Steelers had an excellent start in the final period, drawing level 1:14 into the session on the powerplay through Evan McGrath. A little under ten minutes later the visitors took the lead – despite playing a man short, they broke 2-on-1 and John Armstrong fired past Beskorowany to give Sheffield the lead.
The Giants were level not long later though, some pressure in the Steelers’ zone and a pass into space found Dwyer to finish with the snapshot high past Climie. 33 seconds later the Giants were back in the lead as Dwyer cut in from the goal line, skated across Climie and then out-lasted the Steelers’ netminder to slot high into the net – that completing the Giants forward’s hat-trick. When Darcy Murphy out-battled Ben ‘O Connor on the Steelers’ blueline and fired past Climie the Giants were two ahead with 2:30 left in the game. On a late powerplay, and with the goalie pulled, Jonas Westerling found the top scorer of Beskorowany’s net to make it 4-3 with 47 seconds left. But it wasn’t enough and the Giants held on a four-point weekend.
