Goals and assists
If there was ever a series to prove the cliché about ‘no easy game’ in the EIHL, then this weekend’s games between the Lightning and Devils go a long way to doing that.
Beaten in Cardiff 24 hours earlier, the Lightning again ran the league leaders close – indeed the hosts took the lead only 44 seconds into the game through Nelson Armstrong. Joey Marin tied things up at 3:14 with a wrist-shot that gave Killeen no change, before at the 7:33 mark Stephen Dixon put the finishing touches to a fine solo effort from Drew Schiestel. There were still more goals to come however in the opening period – 16 seconds later Bryce Reddick put the Devils 3-1 ahead, and then a mistake from Killeen coughing up the puck eventually allowed Joey Haddad to slot into a gaping goal at 17:01. James Livingston had the last word in the period, putting the Devils 5-1 ahead with 1:09 left to play in the first.
MK rallied however and got themselves back in the game in the middle session with two goals in just over five minutes – the first came from James Griffin at 29:33; the next at 34:45 on the powerplay as some crisp passing eventually found Michael Fine unmarked at the back post for the tap in. Charles Linglet re-established the visitors’ three-goal cushion however at 38:05, latching on to a rebound from Matt Pope’s shot; but the Lightning hit back 45 seconds later through Cole Shudra.
Remarkably for a game with 10 goals in the first two periods – between teams that had shared 11 the night before – there was no further scoring in the game in the final period, and the Devils held on for a valuable two points to extend their lead at the top of the table to three points.
