Goals and assists
Two defensive zone turnovers from the Devils ultimately helped Belfast edge past Cardiff and go to a point behind in the league thanks to a two-goal win on Friday night at the SSE Arena.
An early lead was definitely what the Giants would have wanted in front of their own fans, and they got it 3:22 into the game after a lovely deke by Darcy Murphy allowed him to set up Dustin Johner for the close-range finish.
An excellent pass from Charles Linglet set up a chance for the Devils in front which was saved, but Layne Ulmer was on hand with the rebound to find Joey Haddad to slot into a gaping net and tie the game at 13:26.
No goals in the second period meant the teams were still tied going into the final 20 minutes, but just over eight minutes in the Giants went back ahead. Playing 5-on-3 shorthanded, a bad line change from the Devils allowed Jordan Smotherman to skate into the zone and pick his spot to fire past Ben Bowns at 49:18.
The Devils were however level with 51:32 on the clock on a powerplay of their own – Gleason Fournier firing a wrist-shot through traffic that beat Tyler Beskorowany. Two defensive mistakes were however going to cost the Devils and hand victory to the Giants – Josh Batch fanned on a pass which allowed Darcy Murphy in on goal, and despite Bowns making the initial save the Giants’ forward found a fortunate rebound to fire home at 53:37. Late in the game the Devils tried to get Bowns to the bench for the extra attacker but found the Giants’ forechecking too good to stop it – in his own end Gleason Fournier was then dispossessed by Blair Riley, who shot past Bowns to make it 4-2 with a minute remaining, and that’s how things finished after a thoroughly entertaining game.
The two sides meet again tomorrow night for Part II of their series this week.
