A frantic finish in a game where the Steelers came from behind twice saw both sides take a point at the Motorpoint Arena, with the visitors winning a shootout for the bonus.
After a goalless opening period who else but Alex Guptill was on hand to put the Panthers ahead with 4:53 of the second session gone. That was a lead that the panthers held for almost 21 minutes, the tying goal coming through Jonathan Phillips for the Steelers with 45:51 on the board.
The Panthers, trying to keep up pace with Belfast and Cardiff above them, took the lead again however with little left on the clock – Jaynen Rissling putting his side into the lead with only 6:06 to go. However a slashing minor on Guptill gave the Steelers a great chance to level up, which they duly did – Mark Matheson with the goal just under two minutes’ after his side had gone behind to make it two each.
No winner in the remainder of regulation time or OT meant we headed to a shootout, which took six rounds to decide the winning team. While Justin Kovacs scored the for the Panthers and Rob Dowd for the Steelers in rounds two and three respectively, it took until shot six for Steelers’ and Anthony DeLuca to win it for the away side.
