Belfast bounced back from their two losses in Cardiff last weekend with a three-goal win over Fife in the first of their back-to-back series.
The game could have gone the other way after Fife took an early lead – Danick Gauthier showing why the Flyers’ powerplay is more dangerous away from home than in their own building. However the Giants were level a little over five minutes later through Chris Higgins, and by 13:47 had taken the lead with Jonathan Ferland finding the net. That wasn’t the end of the scoring in the opening period though, Gauthier struck again 16 seconds before the buzzer to make it a tied game after 20 minutes.
Kyle Baun put the hosts ahead with 30:22 gone in the middle session, before he then assisted on Curtis Leonard’s goal to make it 4-2 23 seconds later – both powerplay goals. At 31:43 Ferland struck again to put the home side 5-2 ahead and in control, although a bad turnover allowed Joe Bararaba to eventually beat Beskorowany with 41 seconds left in the period to bring the deficit back to two goals.
Fife had their chances in the final period but could get another goal to move back to within one. A bizarre empty netter settled things – Chris Owens left for the Flyers’ bench, but his side turned the puck over allowing Blair Riley to score from inside his own zone with Owens stranded.
