Belfast added more pressure on Cardiff in the race for the league title by going top of the table thanks to a home blanking of Fife. The Giants now lead the league by virtue of more regulation wins (tiebreak criteria), but have played a game more than the Devils.
The Giants built their lead gradually over the game, but got off to the best possible start by going ahead inside the opening minute when Kyle Baun pounced on a rebound, slotting home on his second bite of the cherry with 43 seconds played.
1:54 into period two they doubled their advantage, a turnover allowing Kevin Raine to pinch in from the blueline and shoot five-hole past Shane Owen to make it 2-0.
The game was effectively put to bed 4:23 into the final period as fortune and quick-thinking allowed Kyle Baun to get his second of the game – Jordan Smotherman’s shot deflecting into the air, allowing Baun to glove the puck down and fire home. Lewis Hook made it 4-0 at 44:55 as he shot low past Owen on a 2-on-1 opportunity. Andrew Little entered the Flyers’ net for the remainder of the game, though he could do nothing as Patrick Dwyer made it five with a little over seven and a half minutes to play, followed by Darcy Murphy on the powerplay making it 6-0 at 55:50. Baun made it a hat-trick when he scored the game’s final goal with a wrist-shot at 56:39 to complete an impressive wins for the Giants.
