A five-goal lead is what Belfast Giants will take to Coventry on Sunday afternoon after an impressive performance against the Blaze this evening.
The visitors came in confident after beating Cardiff in their final game of the regular season last weekend, but were behind to a Darcy Murphy goal just before the end of the first period to give the Giants a one-goal lead after 20 minutes.
3:54 into the middle period Jordan Smotherman put the Giants two ahead, and it got worse for the visitors at 30:19 when Chris Higgins came in at the back post to convert on the powerplay for 3-0 – Danny Stewart called his timeout after the goal to try to re-group his Blaze side.
2:19 into the final period the league’s all-time points scoters Colin Shields pounced on a rebound at the top of the crease following a Jim Vandermeer shot – #19 fittingly scoring in his last appearance at the SSE Arena. Jonathan Ferland made it 5-0 with a little over ten minutes to go to round off the win for the Giants.
