League and Challenge Cup champions Belfast Giants remain on track for a domestic Grand Slam after they booked their place in the PredictorBet Playoff Finals Weekend with an impressive series win against Coventry.
Up by five goals from the first leg the previous evening, the Giants didn’t take their foot off the gas as they ran in three goals in the opening period at the Skydome.
Jonathan Ferland put them a goal ahead on the night with 10:43 played, followed by Jim Vandermeer’s slapshot at 12:59 and then Jordan Smotherman’s wrist shot with two seconds left in the period.
63 seconds into the middle period a bad rebound from Jordan Hedley allowed Dustin Johner to put the rebound home, before Coventry broke their duck thanks to Shawn Pauly at 26:27. Ben Lake with a nice wrist-shot got the Blaze back to within two, but 74 seconds into the final Period Smotherman got on a rebound to make it 5-2 to the visitors. Smotherman completed a hat-trick with 1:57 to play, with Blair Riley adding the final goal of the game at 59:31 to round off a commanding 7-2 win for the Giants.
