Layne Ulmer got a welcome reception on his first return to Cardiff before the game, but that was as good as things got for the former Devil whose new side left without a point after a close battle.
Joey Martin's perfect pass across the front of the crease for Matthew Myers gave Cardiff the lead on the powerplay with 5:54 gone - the lone goal of the first period.
Joey Haddad doubled the lead with the extra man as he fired in from the edge of the face-off circle 28 seconds in to period two. Manchester however were back in the game before the period was gone, a counter-attack saw Tyson Fawcett set up Dallas Ehrhardt for the Storm's goal at 31:50.
Despite some late pressure the Storm couldn't force an equaliser, and Haddad sealed the game with an empty netter 19 seconds form the final buzzer.
