A double from Jacob Benson and a 30-shot shutout form Shane Owen helped the fife Flyers beat league leaders Guildford Flames on Saturday night in Kirkcaldy.
A goalless opening period owed much to the goaltending of Shane Owen and Kevin Lindskoug. The Flyers goalie was called into early action on a couple of Flames chances, while a rough bounce in the Flames' zone gave the hosts a chance but Lindskoug was equal to it.
A stop-start second period saw the deadlock broken with 4:06 played when Jacob Benson got on to the rebound of his own shot after a feed from Craig Peacock to put the flyers into the lead. Guildford had a couple of powerplay chances but were kept very much to the outside by the Flyers, giving Shane Owen good sight of the pucks coming his way.
Guildford pressed for an equalising goal in the final period but were restricted to shots that Owen was able to track all the way. With Lindskoug pulled inside the final two minutes, Benson added his second of the night on the empty net with 73 seconds left. Michael McNicholas secured the win with the Flyers' third with 11 seconds left to confirm a well-earned win for the hosts.
