Goals and assists
A thoroughly entertaining game at the Skydome saw Nottingham Panthers
leave with a 6-4 win over Coventry Blaze in front of 2,851 fans.
The game was played in memory of Dayle ‘Keeno’ Keen who passed
away a year ago, and was marked by his son preforming the ceremonial
puck drop, and the playing of Flower of Scotland before faceoff.
"Every game is so important in this league, and we did a good job
to get the win," said Reid Stefanson who had two goals nd a pair of
assists in the game. "I think we did well to bounce back after the last
few games this weekend."
The opening period was back and forth but
saw the Panthers lead it by three. Didrik Henbant beat Mat Robson with
5:14 played to put the Panthers ahead, while Otto Nieminen finished some
nice Panthers passing at 16:19 to make it 2-0. Having just killed off a
penalty the Panthers saw Reid Stefanson then score on the rush 30
seconds later to lead 3-0 with 10 seconds left in the first period.
Period two was pure chaos, with hits, a fight, and four goals.
Mike Kennedy and Didrik Henbrant dropped the gloves after a
disagreement and both took fighting majors. Panthers' Matt Alvaro was
then penalised for a check to the head, leading to the Blaze getting on
the board just 59 seconds later - assistant coach Zach Vinnell wristing
through a screen to make it 1-3. After another penalty, this time for a
face-off violation, Zach Heintz got his stick on the end of a Mike
Regush throw to the net to make it a one-goal game at 30:13. Danny
Stewart called his timeout to calm his team down after the goal, but
some 50 seconds later Zsombor Garát was given a standalone major for a
hit on Alessio Luciani. The Blaze's powerplay went to work again and
tied the game off an excellent Brandon Alderson one-timer at 31:15.
"Sometimes it’s challenging if you’re not getting the shifts you
normally would because of special teams, so it was a good move by our
coach to call a timeout and reset and re-focus us" added Stefanson.
The
Panthers did well to survive the rest of the penalty kill as they were
hemmed in their zone by the Blaze. With the game barely back to 5-on-5 a
strange play around the Blaze net allowed Stefanson to poke into an
empty net and put the Panthers back ahead 2:29 before a much-needed
break for everyone.
The Panthers went back two ahead 1:43 into period three. Mike
Kennedy couldn’t control a pass to his wrong side along the boards, and
Henbrant raced past his and sniped high past Robson to make it 5-3.
Nieminen scored his second of the game at 45:46 to put the Panthers back
three ahead, although Terrance Amorosa scored another powerplay goal
for the Blaze with 9:29 to play to make it a two-goal game again.
Robson was pulled with 4:29 to play as the Blaze chased two
goals, and having had a lot of success with an extra skater. Their cause
was hurt, however, by Nick Seitz’s roughing minor with 2:54 to play,
and the Panthers held on for the two-goal win.
Concluded Stefanson: "Our goal at the beginning of the year was
to be in the league title race, and we’ve done a pretty good job so far
of striving towards that that. The job isn’t finished, it might come
down to the very last games. We’ve put ourselves in a good position and
will keep pushing for that."
