Game recap

Manchester Storm kept their playoff hopes alive by coming back from 3-1 down to beat Coventry Blaze 4-3 on Friday night at the Shelter.

The Storm, who were playing one of their two games in hand on Dundee, had an excellent start when they went ahead inside the opening minute. With the puck worked into the slot by Joe Morrow, Tyler Hinam's backhand shot was tipped past Mat Robson by Stephen Johnson to opening the scoring after 47 seconds.

In an end-to-end opening, the Blaze were level on an odd man rush as Brandon Alderson threw the puck across the face of David Tendeck's net for Alessio Luciani to put home at 5:40. The period ended without further scoring, although Blaze forced several rushes where they were unlucky not to net again.

While Manchester scored early in the first, Coventry struck early in period two to take the lead. Just nine seconds into Johnson’s hooking minor at 20:50, Luciani redirected a Kim Tallberg powerplay shot in front of Tendeck to put the visitors ahead at 20:59.

Under six minutes later, the Canadian used Alderson was a decoy on a 2-on-1 rush and shot himself to beat Tendeck and make it a hat trick at 26:54.

Storm were probably unlucky to find themselves two down in a period where they put Robson to work. The Blaze goalie slide across his crease well to cover a loose puck with Loren Ulett lurking that stopped the home side pulling one back.

Zach Sullivan left the game late in the middle period after taking a hit along the boards, and did not return for the third period.

97 seconds into the third, Storm were back to within just a goal. Coventry were killing minors that carried over from period two, and looked on as the puck broke to Jake Durflinger who chose to shot near side to beat Robson on the powerplay.

Craig Martin, who was lively all evening for the hosts, couldn’t hit the target when played in by Cam Critchlow as Storm pushed for an equaliser in the final 11 minutes, while Dallas Ehrhardt shot just wide from the point.

Coventry ran into penalty trouble again in the second of the third period and were published. On a 5-on-3, Storm were level as Johnson appeared to get the final touch to put the puck past Robson from close range to tie the game at 52:03. 35 seconds later, on a 5-on-4 advantage, a rebound from a Ryan Hughes shot was gloved out of the air by Martin and batted home with Robson stranded to put the home side ahead 4-3.

With Robson pulled, the Blaze’s best chance to tie the game was a Tallberg shot gloved down by Tendeck with 22 seconds to go. That was as close as the Blaze worked the Storm goalie with the empty net, and the clocked ticked down on an important home win.
