In a preseason clash at Visby Ishall on August 17, 2024, HV71 edged out IF Malmö Redhawks 2-1 in a shootout after an unusual conclusion due to ice problems.
The first period ended scoreless, with both teams unable to capitalize on their chances. Malmö had nine shots to HV71's four, but neither could find the net. HV71 received two penalties, but Malmö failed to convert on the power plays.
The second period saw HV71 strike first at 34:44, with Joona Luoto scoring a power-play goal after Johan Ivarsson was sent to the box for tripping. Malmö responded quickly, as Carl Persson equalized at 35:10 with an even-strength goal, assisted by Henrik Haapala. The period ended 1-1, setting up an anticipated final period.
However, the third period couldn't be played due to ice issues, leading to an immediate shootout to decide the game. In the shootout, HV71 prevailed 2-1, with Oliwer Kaski scoring the game-winning shot. Frederik Dichow was excellent in goal for HV71, saving 17 of 18 shots for a 94.44% save rate. Daniel Marmenlind of Malmö was also solid, stopping 11 of 13 shots.
Despite the unusual circumstances, HV71 walked away with the win in front of 595 spectators, with Nikola Pasic and Henrik Haapala being named players of the game.
