In the O2 World home team Eisbären Berlin met the Iserlohn Roosters for the first DEL game of the new year. With only 1:53 played Sven Felski already scored the first goal of the league in 2012. Berlin came over the right wing and a nice backhand pass from Laurin Braun found Felski who had no problems to send the puck over the goal line. While Iserlohn seemed to be still tired during this scene it might have woken them up as they tied the game not even a minute alter through Dave Spina. In an even period this result stood for a long time until Felski brought his colours in front again with his second goal of the evening (19.). After a sharp pass he stood alone in front of Iserlohn goalie Sebastién Caron and left him no chance by rounding him. In the second period it was Berlin that took over the control on the ice completely and so the 3-1 by Julian Talbot after a break away was the logical consequence - although the fans had to wait for the video review to decide if the puck went in or not. When the period seemed already over Dave Spina cut the lead of Berlin to just one goal when he scored with 16 seconds left on the clock by netting in one of only six Roosters shots in the middle period - and this time even shorthanded. In the last period Laurin Braun with his third scorer point in the match increased the lead again to two and Darin Olver with an empty net goal made the final result 5-2.

Straubing is the surprise of the DEL so far this season. On Wednesday they received Krefeld which had won its last game against champion Eisbären Berlin while Straubing lost 3-7 in Hamburg against the Freezers. Both teams had problems to find into the game but two power play goals by Karl Stewart and Matt Hussey in the middle period opened the way for the Tigers' win. Just 35 seconds had been played in the last period when Laurent Meunier scored another goal for the hosts. The guests now tried everything but instead of coming back they had to take the 0-4 after a beautiful break away by Matt Hussey (50.). Only seconds later Ryan Ramsay made the result even more uncomfortabel for Krefeld. As it was far too late to turn around the game, the Penguins could only destroy Jan Guryca's hope for a shutout. Francois Methot had used the rebound.

In Cologne the hosts received bottom club Nürnberg Ice Tigers. The three games betweeen both teams this season were all won by the Sharks so that there were only few people expecting the guests to take points with them. A total of 46-22 shots on goal in favour of Cologne clearly showed the efforts of the hosts on the ice but as scoring goals is what's most important in the game their fans had to leave the arena disappointed. In a match where the Sharks seemed to underestimate their rivals it was Sven Butenschön who brought the guests in front after ten minutes. Shortly after it Yan Stastny could have increased this lead but only hit the goal post. As wasting chances often is punished John Tripp tied the game three minutes after the initial Nürnberg goal. Around "half time" Sven Butenschön and Greg Leeb made the Sharks defensive work look ridiculous. Leeb with a pass from behind the net found Butenschön who had four players around him just watching him score (30.). An individual mistake and a power play goal in the third let Nürnberg win easily against Sharks who had a really weak performance and therefore have to fear to reach their goal - a top-6 playoff spot.

Both clubs had won their last games of 2011 but on Tuesday one of them had to lose at the beginning of the new year.

In a game with low entertainment factor it was Thomas Oppenheimer who brought Hamburg in front after a nice short handed break and the following pass by Rob Collins (8.). In the following time away goalie Jochen Reimer more than once did hold his team in the game with great saves. Despite more shots on goals Munich could only generate few dangerous situations and so the goal of Serge Aubin brought the decision five minute prior to the end. Despite pulling out the goalie during almost the complete last two minutes EHC München could not come back nor could Hamburg increase the lead so that the final result was a deserved 2-0 for the Freezers.

In the 2009/10 DEL season Augsburg and Hannover were the finalists. Not even two years later both teams could miss a pre playoff spot. In the duel of two of the three weakest offensive lines Hannover found the early lead when Tommi Hannus scored in  a power play after just three minutes. On the other side Augsburg wasted three power play opportunities in the first period. After eight minutes of the middle period TJ Trevelyan deflected a blue line shot right into the net to tie the game. Late in the second Stephan Wilhelm scored after a face off with a heavy slapshot and now it took the hosts only a minute to get the new equalizer through Gabeil Gauthier. The last 20 were even but Augsburg had the lucky punch. Kyle Helms had a break and with a nice individual effort he turned the game around with 10:10 left on the clock. Now Augsburg is tenth again and has already ten points more than Hannover.

In Mannheim the DEL record champion received last years playoff finalists Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg. For the guests it was their first game after a Spengler Cup journey with mixed results. In a game were both rivals laid there efforts into the offense it was Steven Wagner who put the 1-0 for Mannheim (26.). Until the end of the middle period Marvin Degon in the power play and Robbie Bina turned the game around completely. Now Mannheim had to react and did the same thing in the last 20 minutes where Ronny Arendt and Nick Dimitrakos were succesfull for the hosts. When everybody expected Mannheim to take all three points it was Sebastian Furchner who tied the game again with 20 seconds left on the clock and a sixth player of his team on the ice. After the over time didn't find a winner it was Yanick Lehoux who secured at least the extra point for Adler Mannheim in the shootout where he was the only player who managed to score.

In the game between two aspirants for a top play off position home team Ingolstadt managed to get a three goal lead just till the beginning of the second period. Two goals by Luciano Aquino and one by Rick Girard made Ingolstadt look like the early winner. But Connor James, Andrew Roach and Adam Courchaine were able to tie the game again for the guests so that the game went into the over time. There it was Jared Ross after 1:34 who let the extra point in Bavaria.
