Mannheim disappoints again
09 Jan 2012 | Dennis Mende
Only two days after the 1-4 in Nürnberg and the loss of the first place in the DEL table, Mannheim lost again against a bottom club. Cologne also couldn't stop its downward trend by losing in Hamburg. The only clear win came from Augsburg against Straubing.

In Hamburg the Kölner Haie couldn't stop their downward trend. Despite an early lead by team captain John Tripp after just five minutes, Cologne lost the control over the game in the middle period where Ryan Stone (23.) and Patrick Traverse (33.) turned the game around completely for the Freezers. Two minutes after the 2-1 for Hamburg it was Alexander Weiß who tied the game in an 5 on 3 powerplay situation. In an even third period the score didn't change so that the game went into overtime where Brett Engelhardt scored the game-winning goal for the hosts after only 15 seconds.

Bottom club Nürnberg Ice Tigers wanted to continue its race to the pre-playoff spots after two solid wins against Cologne and Mannheim earlier in the week. In Ingolstadt everything looked like they were again able to win against another favourite. After 22 minutes the guests were leading 3-0 due to goals by Fischhaber, Oblinger and Ehliz. After the last goal by Nürnberg the hosts woke up and needed only exactly two minutes for the goal of Thomas Greilinger. When Michel Periard scored in the power play (32.) the game was open again and after Ingolstadt kept the pressure at a high level Jeff Likens scored the equalizer at the beginning of the third period - again in a power play situation. In the following time Nürnberg was lucky not to lose in regulation and also the overtime didn't bring the win for Ingolstadt despite 4-1 shots on goal so that the shootout had to decide the game. There it was Thomas Greilinger who scored the game-winner in the fith round while Brad Leeb missed for Nürnberg which at least earned one point for its good first period.

During the last weeks Düsseldorf lost much ground in the DEL table and so the DEG Metro Stars wanted to turn the trend around by winning at home against the Iserlohn Roosters. Despite a plus in shots on goal of 30-14 after two periods, the hosts lay back 1-2. Michael Hackert and Michael Wolf had scored for the guests - the second goal in a power play situation - while Ben Gordon cut the lead to one two minutes prior to the end of the middle period. Düsseldorf kept the pressure alive and tied the game when Patrick Reimer found the back of the net in one of six power plays of the hosts with 7:40 left on the clock. Whether the rest of the regular time nor the over time brought a winner, so that the shootout was decisive. There it was Michael Hackert who scored in both his attempts while on the other side only Patrick Reimer was succesful. With the two points of this game Iserlohn defended the tenth and last pre-playoff spot.
Augsburg had to win against Straubing to stay in touch with the preplayoff spots. In the Bavarian derby against the Straubing Tigers they earned a two-goal lead in the first period after Chad Bassen and Mario Valery-Trabucco had scored. Just 13 seconds after the 2-0 for Augsburg, it was Laurent Meunier who brought hope back to the guests who lay behind despite outshooting their opponents 13-8 in the first 20 minutes. Two power play goals by Darryl Boyle and Brian Roloff decided the game in favour of Augsburg until "half time" and again it was Meunier who cut the lead before the second break. While Straubing was the more active team on the ice during the first 40 minutes despite laying behind, Augsburg earned its win by completely dominating the last period where Valery-Trabucco's second goal brought the final score of 5-2.
In Munich the fans saw an even game for a long time. The guests from Wolfsburg did get in front two times in the first six minutes of the first two periods through Höhenleitner and Davis while the hosts could tie the game only a couple of minutes later through Benda and Ulmer. When Patrick Davis scored his second and brought the Grizzly Adams in front for the third time, Munich didn't find another answer. Instead John Laliberte made the final score 2-4 with his empty-netter with one second left.

DEL record champion Adler Mannheim received the Krefeld Pinguine whose head coach Rick Adduono was in a position where he had to win to avoid being fired according to the media. His team earned a two-goal lead after Richard Pavlikovsky had scored two times in the power play - the second one in a 5-on-3 situation. Although Chris Lee cut the lead for Mannheim after 13:28 being played in the middle period - also in a power play - Patrick Hager needed only 33 seconds to get back the two-goal lead for Krefeld which they didn't give up until the end of the game. After this win Krefeld has cut the distance to the last pre-playoff spot by one point to three.
