Five KHL games were played on the last day of January.
Sibir 3-2 SO Metallurg NkIn the first game of the day Sibir faced Metallurg Nk on the home ice. The away team took a quick lead with a power-play goal by Alexander Mereskin at 05:26. In the second Sibir dominated on the ice, they outshot Metallurg 19-8 and scored only once through Vyacheslav Solodukhin with a men-advantage at 27:59. For Solodukhin it was the second goal for Sibir after being traded from SKA. Alexander Shvetsov who had an unlucky trip from Yermak (VHL) to Spartak received another chance to play in KHL for Sibir. He gave his new team a 1-goal lead after Jonas Enlund pass at 48:18. Three minutes later Metallurg tied the game with Alexei Medvedev's goal - again in power-play. The game had to be decided in the shootout series where only Shvetsov scored and led Sibir to the victory.
Vityaz 0-3 HC LEVHC Lev started the road trip in Chekhov facing local Vityaz. Tough guy Jeremy Yablonski whose suspension was cut some days ago started this game as Captain of the Russian team. His two penalties early in the second decided the game. Both times Stepan Novotny scored with assists from Jiri Sekas and Rastislav Spirko. At 53:01 Spirko closed the game using passes from Spirko and Grant Lewis. HC Lev goalie Jan Laco stopped 30 shots and made perfect his fifth shutout this season. This win helped HC Lev to improve their position to the 9th place in the West.
Severstal 2-4 Dinamo MnDinamo Minsk started their road trip with an important win over Severstal. All goals of the game happened during a 7 minute span in the second. It’s interesting that the Severstal players opened and ended this span with goals by Vadim Shipachyov in power-play at 25:31 and Alexei Tsvetkov shorthanded goal at 32:44. As for Dinamo Minsk they scored three times in 57 seconds with goals by Jaroslav Obsut, Teemu Laine, Andrei Mikhalyov. Dmitry Meleshko during a 5-on-3 play added the fourth goal to the Severstal net at 31:07. The Belarussian team increased their lead in the Tarasov division over Torpedo to 2 points.
Torpedo 3-2 SO AmurTorpedo beat Amur 3-2 in the shootout series. The game for the Khabarovsk team started well. At 04:02 Dmitry Tarasov used a mistake from Torpedo players to open the scoring to 0-1. A Minute later Jan Lasak denied shot from a short distance and Alexander Yevseyenkov with a high shot tied the game. In the second Torpedo played more aggressive and pulled ahead at the start of the period. Vladimir Gorbunov used a pass from Yevseyenkov to beat Lasak at 24:53. In the end of the game Amur pulled out Lasak and managed to tie the game. With 1:18 remaining Jakub Petruzalek scored with assists from Tarasov and Alexander Nikulin. In the shootout Torpedo players were more accurate and Martin Thornberg scored the game-winning goal.
CSKA 4-1 SpartakCSKA won the third of four game against arch-rivals Spartak this season. Spartak began the game very active but Nikita Gusev with a nice high wrist shot opened the score after a pass from his childhood teammate Nikita Kucherov at 08:49. With 5 seconds remaining in the first CSKA extended the lead: Denis Parshin found himself alone in front of the net after a pass from Alexander Guskov and beat Sergei Borisov into the empty net. Spartak tried to turn the game around in the second but one counter-attack and Sergei Shirokov made it 3-0 at 32:45. With 4 seconds remaining in the second Spartak used a power-play chance. Ivan Baranka fed up a pass to Roman Lyuduchin who beat Rastislav Stana in front of the net. In the middle of the third Alexander Guskov scored a goal from the blue line to close the game at 4-1. After this loss Spartak lost all realistic chances to get into the playoffs for the first time in KHL history.
