On Friday five games were played in the DEL. Wolfsburg did get an as suprising as unusual away win in Berlin, Straubing and Mannheim improved their top-6 position while Krefeld and München made big steps towards the playoffs.
Eisbären Berlin - Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg 3:4 OTIn the O2 World Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg ended an eight-year long away losing streak against their nemesis Eisbären Berlin by winning for the first time in the German capital since 2004.
In a first period completely dominated by the guests who outshot Berlin 20 to 6, it took them a while to get rewarded for their scoring attempts. With 4:32 left in the first it was Christoph Höhenleitner who opened what should become the "game of the late goals". He used a long pass over the left wing by Nathan Paetsch and shot the puck into the right corner where he surprised Rob Zepp. In the last minute of the first Adrian Foster increased the lead for Wolfsburg, but in the same minute Berlin had its first power play opportunity, used by Barry Tallackson who scored with just one second left to play. In the middle period the hosts improved a lot, motivated by their last goal but again the fans had to wait a long time for the next goal to come - this time Sven Felski tied the game in the last minute of the second period. But what had be done by the Eisbären attack in the first, was repeated by Wolfsburg in the second when John Laliberte scored with the break in a delayed powerplay. The last 20 minutes began with pressure by Berlin but guest goalie Lukas Lang did a good job between the posts. Still Berlin managed to tie the game again with a goal by TJ Mulock when only 58 seconds where left on the clock and the hosts had already pulled out their goalie for another attacker. In the overtime Christopher Fischer secured the Grizzly Adams the extra point.
DEG Metro Stars - Kefeld Pinguine 2:4Five days after their important away win in the big derby against the Kölner Haie, DEG Metro Stars received Krefeld for the small "Rhine derby". The first two periods were both dominated completely with a total of 26 to 10 shots on goal by the Penguins which scored two times through Francois Méthot and Richard Pavlikovsky - the second one in a power play. In the last 20 minutes Düsseldorf fought its way back into the match and managed to tie the game after Connor James and Andrew Hedlund - also the second one in power play - were succesful in their shoting attempts. When everything looked like Düsseldorf might turn the game around with only one good period, Rok Ticar scored with 90 seconds left on the clock for Krefeld. Half a minute later Daniel Pietta ended the hosts hope for points with an empty-netter.
ERC Ingolstadt - Straubing Tigers 3:5The Straubing Tigers continued with their good momentum by overruning third placed ERC Ingolstadt in one of the Bavarian derbies. The away team from Straubing opened the score through French international Laurent Meunier after half of the first period was played. Later in the period Karl Stewart increased the lead while his team was shorthanded. With 1:24 left to play in the first 20 minutes Christoph Gawlik cut the lead to just one but early in the second it was Daniel Sparre who get the two-goal lead back to Straubing. In the 37th minute of the match René Röthke even gave the Tigers a three-goal lead for the first time in the game. In a third period with only a total of ten shots on goal from both sides, Christoph Gawlik with his second of the evening and Tyler Bouck - already with a sixth attacker on the ice - cut the lead to just one goal but Ingolstadt's efforts were suddenly stopped when Matt Hussey scored into the empty net for the final result of 5-3 in favour of Straubing with about two minutes left to play.
EHC München - Augsburger Panther 3:1Despite having won in Hannover earlier this week, Augsburg continued its weak away form with a loss in the derby against EHC München. The game started eventful with two early goals in the first three and a half minutes by Christian Wicher for München and Mario Valery-Trabucco for Augsburg. These should stay the only goals for a very long time. At the beginning of the third Martin Schymainski brought München back in front and with four seconds left to play Mike Kompon decided the game with an empty-netter.
Iserlohn Roosters - Adler Mannheim 4:5 OTIserlohn was in need for points to keep their chances to make the playoffs and so they started with a lot of pressure. Michael Wolf and Mike York did get the Roosters a fast two-goal lead but still in the first period Frank Mauer cut the lead to one for the guests. In the middle period Adler Mannheim intensified their efforts so that Michael Glumac and Marc El Sayed turned the game around till the end of the second. When Adam Mitchell scored the fourth unanswered goal for Mannheim early in the third, the game seemd to be already over. But only 18 seconds later Colton Fretter brought Iserlohn back in to the match and a goal by Steve Rupprich a couple of minutes later made everything open again. With 23 seconds left to play in the overtime, Chris Lee gave the extra point to the favourites Adler Mannheim.
