Italy gets tournament win in the shootout against the hosts from Ukraine
9.2.2012:Lithuania - Italy 0:4
Tournament favourites Italy started their trip to Kiev with an easy 4-0 win against Lithuania. After 60 minutes they outshot their opponent 38 to 9. Luca Ansoldi opened the score for the Italians in the middle of the first period in a power play situation. The game was decided in the second period when the Southern Europeans scored three in a six-minute span. Luca Felicetti, Anton Bernard and Giulio Scandella had made the result relatively clear. In the last 20 minutes the Italians showed mercy and Lithuania could avoid another goal while Daniel Bellissimo earned a shutout.
Ukraine - Romania 7:0
The hosts had no problems in their tournament opener against the underdogs from Romania. Despite his team being outshot 23 to 4 in the first period Romanian goalkeeper Adrian Catrinoi only allowed one goal by Denys Zabludovskiy in the 17th minute. In the second Victor Andryuschenko and Denys Isaenko extended the lead which still stayed quite low compared to the number of chances the hosts had at this point. In the last 20 minutes the resistance of the guests was blown away and Dmytro Isaenko, two times Oleksandr Yakovenko and Yevgen Pastukh made it 7-0 with a differance in shots on goal of 57 to 16.
10.2.2012:Italy - Romania 4:3
In a classy performance Romania almost get the big surprise against Italy. Just one day after a terrible seven-goal defeat against Ukraine, the men from Europe's South East showed their potencial against the tournament's favourites. In an even first period Zsombor Antal opened the score for Romania in the 7th minute. Diego Iori and Stefano Marchetti turned the result around even in the first but with 17 seconds to go in the period Szabolcs Molnar tied the game. In the second period Antal brought Romania in front again with his second goal of the day but until "half time" Luca Felicetti had given the answer to that goal in a power play. In a game which was suprisingly tight even regarding shots on goal (48 to 40 in favour of Italy) only 2:27 were left on the clock when Anton Bernard scored the game-winner in a men advantage for Italy. In the last minute Romania tried to get rewarded at least with a point for their hard fight by pulling out their goalie for an extra-attacker but the result didn't change anymore and Italy was lucky to get all three points.
Ukraine - Lithuania 5:1
The hosts had another easy job to do in their game against Lithuania. Andrei Korneiciuk had scored the sole goal for the guests late in the second period to answer the three-goal lead Ukraine had at this time after goals by Oleksandr Toryanik, Oleksandr Pobyedonostsev and Pavlo Borysenko. Early in the third Sergiy Chernenko and Sergiy Babynets made the final score of 5-1 perfect.
11.2.2012: Romania - Lithuania 4:3 OT
The Romanians tried to decide the game in their offensive efforts just as they almost get the surprise a day earlier against Italy. At the same time the defense had a lot to do. Three times did Romania go in front during the regular time by goals from Zsolt Molnar, Szabolcs Szocs and Zsombor Antal but Lithuania never gave up and came back after each goal with the equalizer by Arnoldas Bosas, Aivaras Bendius and Dovydas Kulevicius. When Szocs scored his second of the day in overtime for the game winner, Romania finally received two well-deserved points in this EIHC edition.
Italy - Ukraine 5:4 SO
A crowd of 6.137 came to the Kiev Arena to see the decisive match for the tournament win between Italy and Ukraine. In many aspects the game was similar to the ROM-LIT match played earlier the day. In regular time Italy had four times a lead but Ukraine always came back as they wanted to give their fans a win of their home tournament. In the first Anton Bernard opened the score with only 1:58 played. In the following two and a half minutes goals by Kosyantyn Kasyanchuk and Vincent Rocco were added for a 2-1 lead for Italy after the first. Early in the second Oleksandr Toryanik tied the game again for Ukraine. This goal stood for a long time until Federico Benetti made it 3-2 in the 36th minute. With only five seconds left in the middle period Kasyanchuk was sucessful with a short hander to score another equalizer of his team. In the third period Giulio Scandella brought Italy back in front but Yevgen Pastukh let the game go into overtime with 4:56 left to play. In the overtime Ukraine was the more active game but no side could decide the match in the additional five minutes. In the shootout Giulio Scandella and Robert Sirianni converted their attempts for Italy to give their team the tournament win.
