Cologne continues negative streak
18 Feb 2012 | Dennis Mende
The Sharks from Cologne fell out of the playoff spots due to a loss in Ingolstadt which has a tight race for the regular title with Berlin which won against Krefeld. Hannover again disappoints their own fans.
Adler Mannheim - DEG Metro Stars 2:3 SOThe DEG Metro Stars made another important step towards their playoff qualification by winning against Mannheim in the shootout. The home side had the better start and earned a two-goal lead after two periods when Adam Mitchell and Frank Mauer had scored for the Eagles - the first one in a 5 on 3 power play situation. In the middle of the third Evan Kaufmann, who earlier this week signed a contract for the next season with the Nürnberg Ice Tigers, cut the lead to just one and with 21 seconds left to play in the regular time Andrew Hedland tiet the game. After the overtime didn't find a winner, it was Patrick Reimer who decided the shootout to give Düsseldorf the extra point.
Hannover Scorpions - Hamburg Freezers 1:5In the northern derby between the Scorpions ans the Freezers the bottom club from Hannover was on the same level with the guests from Hamburg. The guest lead by Ryan Stone was tied by Chris Herperger in the first minute of the middle period. When Thomas Oppenheimer brought the guests back in front around "half time" the Scorpions lost their self-confidence and in the third they received another three goals by Brett Engelhardt, Jerome Flaake and again Ryan Stone. Freezers goalie John Curry had 27 saves against Scorpions who got the longest negative home streak of DEL history. Their last home win came at 30 october and they have lost their last consecutive 14 games on home ice.
ERC Ingolstadt - Kölner Haie 6:4Cologne had to take its fifth regulation loss in the last six games and now fell back to the 12th place with one point less than necessary for the first pre-playoff spot at the moment. Their away game in Ingolstadt had begun with a fast goal of the hosts when Thomas Greilinger put the puck into the net after four and a half minutes. In the rest of the first period an even game developed with eleven shots on each side. Despite scoring the equalizer through Charlie Stephens with the man advantage the second period should become a complete horror scenario for Cologne. The guests received several stupid penalties and this turned out to be a stupid idea for a team that is one of the worst in penalty killing in the whole league. Thomas Greilinger with his second, two times Jeff Likens and Michel Periard - all in power play - get a comfortable lead for the hosts. With two minutes to go Jared Ross even made it 6-1 in a period where Ingolstadt shot out their opponents 17 to 6. In the third Cologne found back into the game and came as close as to cut the lead to two after goals by Gogulla, Ankert and Schütz but Ingolstadt secured a deserved 6-4 win to stay one point behin first-placed Eisbären Berlin.
Eisbären Berlin - Krefeld Pinguine 7:4In recent weeks Krefeld showed that you can count with them in the race for the DEL playoff spots and earlier this week they entered the pre-playoff positions after a 1-0 home win against their direct competitors from Cologne. In their away match in Berlin the Penguins overslept the beginning and soon lay back 0-4 after the first two periods. Barry Tallackson, two times Darin Olver and Jonathan Sim had scored for the Polar Bears. When Laurin Braun added another goal to the already huge lead of the home side early in the third nobody expected the game to become exciting again. Within only three minutes Krefeld cut the lead to just one after goals by Boris Blank (2), Duncan Milroy and Andreas Driendl - the one of Milroy even shorthanded. The race to catch up of the Western Germans should stop when Nicholas Angell scored for Berlin with one and a half minutes left to play. With ten seconds on the clock Julian Talbot scored an empty-netter to make it 7-4.
EHC München - Iserlohn Roosters 0:5The Bavarians's home match against their playoff rivals from Iserlohn was more than disappointing. EHC München never found into the game and forgave all its six power play opportunities - the second last one even bounced back to have a goal against. On the other side Iserlohn used two of its four power plays. Tobias Wörle (2), Michael Wofl, Christian Hommel and Mike York earned an important three-point win for the Roosters. Guest goalie Sébastien Caron earned a shutout with 31 saves while München substituted their starting goalie Jochen Reimer after two periods but also Sebastian Elwing wasn't lucky and hat to let through two in his first two minutes between the posts. Iserlohn is now back in the playoff spots due to a better goal difference.
Augsburger Panther - Nürnberg Ice Tigers 3:5Bottom club Nürnberg surprised one of the best home teams of the DEL by winning in Augsburg. The Panthers had a good start with two early goals by Christian Chartier and Sean O'Connor. In the middle period Yan Stastny and Shane Joseph managed to tie the game but Daryl Boyle brought Augsburg back in front with a power play goal in the same 20 minutes. In the third Chris Collins turned the match around with two goals and later it was Greg Leeb who made the decision with 81 seconds left to play.
Straubing Tigers - Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg 4:3 SOThe two top-6 teams from Straubing and Wolfsburg made it difficult for each other to get the win and as there had to be a winner it is not suprising that the game went into the shootout. Straubing outshot the Lower Saxons 37 to 25 but the guests were more effective in front of the goal. Nathan Paetsch openend the score for the Grizzlies in a power play situation after five but in the same minute eurohockey.com's player of the month for january Matt Hussey tied the game even in the same minute. In the second Ryan Ramsey turned the game around for Straubing in a 5 on 3 power play but also Wolfsburg showed its qualities by making it 3-2 after goals by Christopher Fischer and Kai Hospelt. The third period and the overtime stayed goalless so that the penalty shootout had to decide and there it was Carsen Germyn who gave Straubing the extra point.
