Kölner Haie cannot stop free fall

Tuesday's two DEL games were both decided in overtime.
Kölner Haie - Hamburg Freezers 1:2 OT
After a losing streak during past weeks the Kölner Haie were in need of a
home win to come closer again to the pre-playoff spots. The Sharks
tried a lot and had many good opportunities during the first two periods
but despite 37 shots on goal they did not manage to get the lead
against the favourites from Hamburg. But early in the third it was
Philip Gogulla who did it better and finally brought Cologne in front
in the 42nd minute. In the following time the home side missed more than
once the opportunity to decide the game and so it was Brett Engelhardt
who scored the equalizer for Hamburg with six minutes to go - it was
only one of four shots on goal in this period for the Freezers. Late in
the overtime Rob Collins even gave the extra point to the guests who now
have five points more than the 7th placed DEG Metro Stars and would
therefore avoid having to play thre pre-playoffs first. Cologne is now
three points behind the first pre-playoff spot. Star of the match was
Freezers goalie John Curry who made 53 saves!
Nürnberg Ice Tigers - EHC München 3-2 OTIn the Bavarian derby Nürnberg had the better start and Sven Butenschön opened the score for the hosts already in the fifth minute of play. Early in the second it was Shane Joseph who increased this lead in power play but around "half time" Jason Ulmer was the first player from Munich to appear on the scoreboard - also in a succesful power play. In an even third period the guests managed to tie the game with 7:51 left on the clock. After the game went into overtime the fans didn't have to wait long as Shane Joseph with his second of the night scored after only 18 seconds to give Nürnberg the extra point. Nürnberg stays penultimate without any realistic chances of improving their position until the end of the season while München now has a two-point distance to the non-playoff spots.
