Brynäs and Färjestad won when the second day of the first quarter final round was played in Elitserien.
Brynäs - Frölunda 3-1It was a tight and even game where Brynäs managed to make use of their home ice advantage and won 3-1. But after the almost everyone talked about a situation before Brynäs' first goal. Brynäs was on the power play when Mats Lavander slashed Pierre Johnsson's stick, Johnsson's stick broke and the referee raised his arm for a penalty, but just a second later the Brynäs scored and the referee took his arm down and signalled for goal, afterwards claiming that his penalty call was for Johnsson that was sent off for crosschecking.
Just two and a half minutes later Brynäs doubled their lead when Jonathan Granström found the net with hard shot on a two on one after a mistake by Frölunda. Frölunda bounced back when Jari Tolsa fired it home high behind Johan Holmqvist, who made his only mistake in a very good game by him. In the third period Frölunda had some good chances, Fredrik Petterson had the best but Holmqvist denied him with a great glove save. Instead Calle Järnkrok sealed the victory on the open net.
HV71 - Färjestad 1-4A strong away game by Färjestad in the first quarter final between two gigants. Rickard Wallin scored the important first goal late in the first period. That after a period were Färjestad had problems on offense with only three shots on goal. But the goal gave Färjestad the momentum and in the second period it was all about the guests who added two more goals by Magnus Nygren and Per Åslund.
Being down 0-3 HV71 pulled the goalie early and Rickard Wallin made it 0-4 when he played some carambole with the boards when clearing the puck from his own zone. HV71 scored a consolation goal by Mattias Karlsson which perhaps can give some confidence back after this hard loss on home ice. Färjestad on the other hand perhaps is starting to find their way back to the form that gave them gold last year.
