Elitserien: Both quarter finals to overtime
16 Mar 2012 | Fredrik Pålsson
Both the quarter finals played on Thursday was decided in overtime. The qualification round to next year's Elitserien also started.
HV71 - Färjestad 4-3 OTBeing down 0-2 both in the game and the series things seemed dark for HV71 after the first period. But after a goalie change and with some fighting spirit HV71 came out as a new team in the second period and really outplayed Färjestad. Eventually they also tied the game after goals brom Johan Davidsson and Jesse Joensuu.
Per Ledin gave HV71 the lead for the first time 11:39 into the third period and a few minutes later more bad news came for Färjestad as the goalie Christopher Nihlstorp had to leave the game with a neck injury after a collision with HV71's Jesper Fasth. But just a couple of minute later Mattias Sjögren tied the game with his second goal of the game, after a big mistake by both the HV71 defense and the referee. The HV71 defense gave away the puck but the referees also missed an obvious penalty on Färjestad for a punch against Jason Krog who lost his helmet and had to leave the ice leaving HV71 with one player short.
The goal took the game to overtime which was quite even but it the end it was HV71 who got the winning goal when Jesse Joensuu scored his second goal of the game at 17:07. A well deserved win for HV71 who did their best effort so far in the playoffs.
Brynäs - Frölunda 4-3 OTHome ice advantage seems to be important in this series as all games have ended with home wins. After today's overtime win Brynäs now leads the series 2-1. The game winner was scored 14:37 into the overtime when Ryan Gundersons blueliner found the net on a power play. In regular time Brynäs hade the lead both 1-0 and 2-1 after two goals by Jakob Silfverberg, who also was voted league MVP by the players of the league this week. In between those goals Magnus Kahnberg scored twice, but only one of them did count.
Fredrik Pettersson tied the game on a 5 on 3 situation and 5:52 into the third Frölunda took the lead for the first time when Mats Rosseli Olsen made it 2-3. Then it looked that he could be the hero but instead he was the villain as he was the one sitting on the penalty bench when Brynäs scored the game winner. Calle Järnkrok took the game to overtime with the 3-3 goal.
KvalserienKvalserien, where six teams play for two spots in Elitserien next year also started today. The two teams from Elitserien that try to defend their places didn't start very well. Djurgården lost to Rögle at home, Timrå was down 1-3 against BIK Karlskoga, but despite turning it around to 4-3 they only got two points as BIK tied the game in the last minute. Timrå however won it overtime, Simon Önerud scored three goals. Leksand won 3-2 away to Örebro.
