Russian defencemen suspended
IIHF gives Kalinin three games, Yemelin one
STOCKHOLM – The IIHF Disciplinary Panel has suspended Russian defenceman
Dmitri Kalinin for three games following his cross-check on Swedish
forward Johan Franzén. Another Russian defenceman, Alexei Yemelin, will
miss one game for spearing Franzén.
Both incidents occurred during Russia’s 7-3 preliminary round win over Sweden on Friday night.
Kalinin’s
third period cross-check on Franzen (one that knocked the Swede out of
the game with a broken nose) resulted in a match penalty for the
Russian, which carries an automatic one-game suspension. Upon further
review the Disciplinary Panel decided to add two additional games to the
suspension. This means that Kalinin will sit out Russia’s final two
preliminary round games and one game in the playoff round.
In
the other incident involving Franzen, the IIHF Disciplinary Panel has
ruled that Yemelin’s slash on Franzen in the first period, for which he
received a two-minute penalty at the time, was in fact a spear and in
violation of the IIHF rules. Yemelin will miss Russia's next game on
Sunday against the Czech Republic.
