Former Finnish national team coach Hannu Aravirta signed a contract with Kärpät of SM-Liiga to replace Mikko Haapakoski as Head Coach.
Kärpät is currently in the 11th place of 14 teams in SM-Liiga, a result that wasn’t good enough for the board that now fired Haapakoski.
“I am very inspired by this mission” says Aravirta to the Kärpät homepage. “Kärpät is the only SM-Liiga team that aroused feelings in me”. During his playing career, Aravirta played six seasons for Kärpät where he also started his coaching career.
Aravirta’s last coaching job was at Modo of Elitserien. He has coached the Finnish national team at 2 Olympics, 6 World Championships and 2 World Juniors as Head Coach. He was before that assistant coach of the Finnish team 1991-1997.
