Recap of all 10 ET games on Sunday
19 Aug 2012 | Dennis Mende
10 European Trophy games were played today in three different countries. Sparta Praha best team with 8 points so far.
Hamburg Freezers - HC Plzen 1929 3-2 DEL team Hamburg Freezers also won their second "home" game of their ET campaign - for marketing reasons they played in Bremerhaven and not in their own arena. Two days earlier they had won against Kometa Brno in Crimmitschau. Plzen had lost their opening game in Berlin and wannted to avoid another loss in Germany. They started with a lot off pressure and first good opportunities when Nick Johnson received a two-minute penalty for boarding. With their first real chance the Freezers scored through Duvie Westcott in the 7th minute - just four seconds had passed after Johnson left for the penalty box. Plzen continued to be the more active side but within 24 seconds of the 20th minute Thomas Oppenheimer and Colin Murphy trippled the lead of their team. Around "halftime" Nick Johnson brought the Czechs on the scoreboard for the first time in an even period. When Jiri Hanzlik cut the lead to just one in the 41st minute the match was completely open again but Hamburg defended their small advantage, also with the help of several Plzen penalties that knocked the guests out of their stride.
Kärpät Oulu - HC Mountfield 3-1 A Czech was the driving force in Kärpäts win over HC Mountfield in the small Raahe Ice Arena today. Tomas Pilhal not only earned two goals and one assist for the Fins but he also was elected man of the match. Power play goals by Toni Kähkönen and Pilhal in the first two periods paved the way for a win in regulation that was exposed to danger when Ales Kotalik scored for Mountfield in the 50th minute. In an even match it was Pilhal whose empty-netter 29 seconds before the final whistle decided the game. Kärpät now has three points while Mountfield lost both their games in Northern Europe so far.
Eisbären Berlin - Kometa Brno 6-1The Polar Bears make the dozen full in their two home wins against Czech opponents. After defeating Plzen 6-4 on Friday, they now also crushed Kometa Brno. In a first period where Brno had the slightly better chances, it was Berlin that opend the score through Matt Foy. Three goals in a two-minute span at the begin of the second period were crucial for today's home win. Jim Sharrow, Tyson Mulock and Mark Katic (PP) made it 4-0. After that Brno was shocked and had to see how another power play led to the 5-0 and the second goal for Matt Foy. In the third the Czechs tried to keep the result in limits but couldn't do more but score the consolidation goal through Miroslav Holec who was sucessful in a shorthanded break away. Before Foy had earned his hat trick - again with the man advantage. Berlin now is second in the North Division while Brno is last after having lost 3-7 in Hamburg on Friday.
Luleå HF - Red Bull Salzburg 7-2The Swedes conquered the first spot in the North Division by sending last year's winners Red Bull Salzburg home with a huge package. Anton Hedman and Daniel Mannberg had put the hosts in front with two early goals before the period ended with throwing all tactics over board. Twice Salburg cut the lead through Ryan Kinasewich and Justin DiBenedetto but both times the Swedes found an immediate answer through Cam Abbott and Toni Koivisto. In the second period a match that had been fair so far was disturbed by many penalties. Still Luleå added another goal through Karl Fabricius. After 40 minutes the working day was over for Red Bull goalie Alex Auld who was substituted by Shawn Hunwick. Jan Sandström and Toni Koivisto with his second let the home side win with a five-goal difference that probably is a little bit too high but not undeserved.
HV71 - Slovan Bratislava 2-0Slovakian KHL newcomers Slovan Bratislava continued with their terrible ET season by losing 0-2 against HV71. Out of their first five games they only earned four points. HV71 on the other side won their second game at home in less than 48 hours and already have collected 6 points. Goalie Viktor Kokman earned a shutout and received three stars that made him man of the match. Already in the 8th minute William Karlsson put the hosts in front. Against rather weak guests a PP goal of Filip Sandberg at the end of the second period already brought the decision to keep all three points in Sweden.
KalPa - Pirati Chomutov 3-4 SOPirati Chomutov once more showed their comeback qualities when they caught up a two-goal deficit in the third period. Milan Kraft had opened the score for Chomutov in the first period but Matti Kuparinen, Sakari Salminen and Artturi Lehkonen turned the match around for KalPa before Miroslav Zalesak and David Hruska tied the game late. As in both their previous matches Chomutov found themselves in a shootout. As on Friday in Jyväskylä they won again and now have 5 points in 3 games.
Linköpings HC - Vienna Capitals 3-4 SOLinköping fought hard against the loss but in the end the Vienna Capitals earned their first win of this ET campaign. Francois Fortier and Marcus Olsson get a two-goal lead for their side within seconds before Sebastian Karlsson and Andreas Jämtin did the same on the other side - still in the first period. In the next period Markus Schlacher regained the lead for Vienna but Christopher Fish managed to tie the game with 15 seconds left in the 2nd. In the remaining time both clubs did work less hard and so the match went into the shootout. There it was again Francois Fortier, who became the match winner for the Austrians.
JYP - Sparta Praha 4-5 OTFinish champions JYP saved one point against Sparta Praha in the first ET match this season that ends in overtime. Sparta's only Finnish player Ari Vallin really must like to play against his fellow countrymen. After adding a goal to Sparta's 5-1 win against KalPa on Friday, he was elected man of the match against JYP (1 goal, 2 assists). Vallin, Troy Milam and Petr Tenkrat had earned a two-goal lead for the Czechs after two periods - Jason Lepine had scored for JYP. Antti Jaatinen made it exciting again with his goal at 40:23 but after a quick answer of Lukas Lunak the match seemed decided early. In a 5 on 3 Kristian Näkyvä cut the lead to one before Miika Roine brough the game to OT. There Dominik Pavovsky scored the game winner at 63:09 to get Praha the extra point.
Jokerit - ERC Ingolstadt 2-1A lat goal by Nichlas Hardt, scored with 2:50 left on the clock, turned the result around for Jokerit and brought them their first ET win this year. The Germans had scored first in an even match through Joe Motzko in the 33rd. With 0:36 played in the last period Jarkko Ruutu had scored the equalizer.
TPS Turku - HC Pardubice 2-4 Finnish side TPS was close to their second win but a great final for Pardubice sent all three points to the Czech Republic. The guests started well but a tripping penalty against Jiri Vasicek - the first penalty in the game - was punished just eight seconds later by Tapio Laakso. Late in the second period a deflection let Parudibce tie the match. In the remaining minutes of the period Turku was close to regaining the lead but missed all occasions - including a 5 on 3 power play. In their next power play, at the begin of the third period, they did it better and Laakso scored the 2-1. Two hard shots by Vaclav Benak and Jiri Cetkovsky get the advantage to Pardubice. When Turku risked everything by pulling off their goalie for an additional attacker they received an empty-netter by Pavel Brendl.
