Despite a 4-1 lead home side Hamburg Freezers gave up a point to Eisbären Berlin in the race for the second spot in North Division of European Trophy
The lone European Trophy game on Sunday was played between the two German teams Hamburg Freezers and Eisbären Berlin. Although already their fourth home game of the current season it was the first time that Hamburg played in the O2 Arena - before they used the opportunity to promote themselves with ET matches in Bremerhaven, Crimmitschau and Rostock.
Just as yesterday when they first battled Berlin the Freezers earned a solid three-goal lead but today the team from the Capital was in a better scoring mood. Christoph Schubert (2) and Patrick Köppchen brought the home team on the winning track just in the starting period with the equalizer through Mark Katic between. Jerome Flaake added another goal right after the first intermission for the 4-1. Both sides created good scoring chances but in the end it was Danish international Mads Christensen who cut the lead to two. With the momentum on their side Berlin's André Rankel (with a shorthander) and Jens Baxmann found a way to tie the game in the third. After a goalless overtime, the shootout had to find a winner and there it was Matt Pettinger who was succesful as the only player to keep the extra point in Hamburg.
Both German teams have two matches left to play in their Division - against unbeaten Swedish side Luleå HF and Finnish top team Kärpät Oulu. Hamburg (11 pts) has to hope that Berlin (13 pts) stumbles over on of their opponents, while Berlin could theoratically still even become group winners.
