Tappara embarrassed Ilves in Tampere derby. The 2012 champions of Germany and Czech Republic both lost the season opener.
In Finnish SM-Liiga Tappara beat Ilves 7-1 in the Tampere derby. Ville Nieminen and Aleksander Barkov scored two goals each in front of 7560 fans.
Three SM-Liiga goalies earned shut-outs today. Juuso Riksman (Blues), Tuomas Tarkki (JYP) and Juha Järvenpää (Ässät).
Blues beat HIFK 2-0 with goals by Jani Hakanpää and Teemu Rinkinen.
Yohann Auvitu, Ramzi Abid and Eric Perrin scored for JYP in the 3-0 win away to KalPa.
Ässät also got a 3-0 win when they beat Lukka in Rauma. Joel Armia scored twice and Mika Niemi once.
German DEL opened today with five games. Last season's champion Eisbären Berlin lost 1-3 home to Straubing Tigers. Blaine Down scored a shorthanded goal and an empty netter for Straubing. Andrew Canzanello also got a goal in power play. Barry Tallackson scored for Eisbären.
Kölner Haie got a 3-2 shoot-out win against Krefeld Pinguine. Christopher Minard scored the only goal in the shoot-out.
Tobias Wörle had four assists when Iserlohn Roosters beat Düsseldorfer EG 5-3.
In Hamburg the home team beat Wolfsburg 4-2 with goals by Brandon Reid, Christoph Schubert, Druval Westcott and David Wolf. Matt Dzieduszycki scored both goals for Wolfsburg.
Adler Mannheim were outshot 30-18 in Ingolstadt but could win the game 2-1 on goals by Frank Mauer and Matthias Plachta. Dennis Endras in the net made 29 saves.
The Czech Extraliga started yesterday with Brno's 4-2 win away to Chomutov. Today another six games were played.
Last season's champion Pardubice lost 4-1 to Trinec. Lukas Zib scored twice while Radek Bonak and Martin Ruzicka both had a goal and two assists. Radovan Somik scored Pardubice's goal.
Bedrich Köhler scored the winner when Zlin beat Slavia Praha 2-1. Petr Cajanek scored 1-0 for Zlin and Petr Jelinek tied the game.
Tomas Vlasak scored three goals and added an assist when Plzen beat Litvinov 6-4. Nicholas Johnson, Vaclav Pletka and Dan Ruzicka also scored for Plzen.
Vitkovice got a 5-2 win away to Mountfield. Vladimir Svacina (2), Roman Szturc, Denis Rehak and Petr Strapac also scored for the winners.
Tomas Netik scored the winner when Liberec beat Kladno 2-1 in a shoot-out game.
Sparta also needed a shoot-out to win their game. Peter Jansky got the winning goal when Karlovy Vary was defeated 2-1.
