DEL/EBEL update

Mannheim takes over first position in DEL. Salzburg with another 9 goals.

In the repetition of last year's playoff finals, Mannheim took revenge against Berlin by crushing them 6-1. Kölner Haie turn match in Straubing with four consecutive goals in the last period. Augsburg and Nürnberg start with wins into the season. Ingolstadt leaves Hannover no chance. Krefeld wins tight game in Wolfsburg.

ERC Ingolstadt sent the Hannover Scorpions home with a 5-0 package. Two days after losing 1-2 on home ice against Mannheim, the Bavarians had a far less aggressive opponent in Scorpions who for sure hoped for a better season opener than this after the terrible last year. The goals for Ingolstadt were scored by Björn Barta, Jakub Ficenec, Joe Motzko, Tyler Bouck and Alexander Oblinger. Goalie Ian Gordon had a 23-save shutout. On the other side German national goalie Dimitri Pätzold stopped 20 of the 25 shots he faced.

The Nürnberg Ice Tigers start with a 4-3 win over the Hamburg Freezers into the new DEL season. In an eventful match the hosts gained a 3-1 lead in the second period before Hamburg came back with two goals early in the third. In the end James Pollock scored the game winner for the Ice Tigers at 52:11 - it was his second goal of the night. One key factor for Nürnberg was the power play with three goals in seven attempts.

Augsburger Panther had a lot of problems in away games last season while Iserlohn won the derby against the DEG Metro Stars on Friday. With the extra boost this gave the Roosters they already went in front at 2:51 through Tobias Wörle. In the second period Augsburg answered with goals by Sergio Somma, Stephen Werner and TJ Trevelyan before Ryan Thang decided everything in the last 20 minutes.

Red Bull Munich lost their season opener on home ice against Düsseldorf in overtime. In a close match Nikolaus Mondt earned the guest lead already at 1:22 but the Metro Stars had to see how Munich turned the result around in the second period through Martin Buchwieser and Martin Ritter. In the end Swedish forward Calle Ridderwall who last year played his first professional season for the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League, was the decisive man in the away win for DEG. First he scored the equalizer at 42:00 and then he was there with the game winner in overtime at 62:18.

Straubing Tigers and Kölner Haie both won their first match of the season. The Sharks defeated Krefeld in shootout while the Tigers had an impressive 3-1 away win against DEL record champion Eisbären Berlin. Today Straubing was close to another surprise against a "big one" of DEL but a 2-0 lead after the first two periods through Daniel Sparre and Michael Endraß wasn't enough today. Cologne came back with a double by Andreas Falk and Alexander Weiß until 47:32. With five minutes to go Felix Schütz added the 2-3 for Cologne and later John Tripp decided everything with an empty-netter in the last minute. Straubing definately deserved more today. For Cologne the weekend was almost perfect with 5 of the possible 6 points.

Krefeld Pinguine earned an important away win by defeating Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg 5-4. With ten minutes left Krefeld was already 4-1 in front before Matt Dzieduszycki cut the lead to just one. At 54:36 Mark Voakes earned the game winner for Krefeld but with 50 seconds to go Robbie Bina kept the game close again. In the end the small distance was enough for the Penguins. While Krefeld now has 4 points, Wolfsburg stays at 0.

Servus TV had chosen to broadcast the top match between Adler Mannheim and Eisbären Berlin on Sunday. After missing the big chance to win the league title on home ice last April, the hosts from Mannheim definately wanted to give the guests from the German capital a hard fight. Mannheim was the more aggressive and motivated side today. With four goals in a high-class match Craig MacDonald, Adam Mitchell, Steven Wagner and Yanick Lehoux let the vice champions run away with a 4-0 lead after two periods. Barry Tallackson scored the only goal for Berlin just 28 seconds after the second intermission but Marcus Kink and Christoph Ullmann made half a dozen full.

Again no points for Dornbirn and Innsbruck. Salzburg in excellent form. First five games of the day won by the away side.

Dornbirn lost their home match against the Graz 99ers despite keeping the result open for a long time. It was a 2-2 after 50 minutes before Dustin Van Bellegooie and Matthias Iberer (empty net) grabbed the two points for the guests.

Two days after their terrible 0-9 defeat in Salzburg, league newcomers HC Innsbruck were close to a surprise against current vice champions EC KAC. On home ice Bryan McGregor had opened the score for Innsbruck but until the second intermission Klagenfurt had made it 1-3. At 44:41 Craig Switzer cut the lead to just one but despite playing without their goalie in the last minutes, Innsbruck couldn't go on to score the equalizer.

At the moment there is no way to stop an aggressive Red Bull Salzburg which is in a goal scoring mood like never before. The game between Hungarian side SAPA Fehervar AV19 and the Austrians was very open in the first two periods with a score of 2-3 after 40 minutes. A double by Ryan Kinasewich and Steven Regier after the second intermission pathed the way for the away win that was crowned by another four goals in the last period. Salzburg had an awesome weekend with 4 points and 18-2 goals.

Current league champions Black Wings Linz tied the match against EC VSV twice in the first period before Markus Peintner scored the game winner for Villach at 19:12 already. In the following two periods Derek Damon added two goals for a solid 5-2 win by the guests.

An excellent second period with a score of 4-1 was decisive in the win of Czech side Orli Znojmo in Slovenia against Olimipija Ljubljana. At 50:54 Richard Jarusek even made added another goal for the deserved Znojmo win.

In a late game Croatian side KHL Medvescak Zagreb faced Vienna Capitals for part two of the journey to the amphitheater in Pula. The home team won 4-1 with goals from Kyle Greentree, Sasa Martinovic, David Brine and Tomislav Zanoski.
