Canada - Russia was a celebration of hockey one more time

The World U20 Juniors in HSBC Arena (Buffalo) and Dwyer Arena (Niagara) has started. Switzerland, Canada, Sweden and USA (OT) win on day one.
The first period of the tournament offered a shocking start. The Germans outshot the Swiss 10-5, but Switzerland was 4-0 ahead! They scored three times in power-play and the German goalie Grubauer looked like a desperate snowman. At 16:09 It could have been a 5-0 lead for Switzerland, when Pistoni went on a breakaway but missed a chance.
From the start of the 2nd period, Switzerland started to play too defensively, Niederreiter disappeared from the ice after a bold start and the Germans took the momentum. Noebels scored a power-play goal and Plachta and Mapes added two more goals later the game. It was the Swiss goalie Conz who prevented the Germans from tying the game. Swiss trembled like leafs until the final buzzer. However, Noebles and Hufner missed their big scoring chances and Switzerland managed to win the game.
Buffalo is just few minutes from the Canadian border and the Maple Leafs showed one more time how much they are passionate about ice hockey. They filled HSBC Arena with more than 18 thousand fans and created a marvelous atmosphere. Both teams played up-and-down, fans could watch many chances on both sides, the Canadians had a momentum most of the game. Russians had some chances to turn the game over when the score was tied 3-3 but Tarasenko, probably the best Russian on ice, did not beat Roy and Team Canada dominated in the 3rd period.
Norway was not that bad that the result 1-7 against Sweden shows. However, they could not hope for points right from the start. Klingberg scored an opener in the 1st minute and Lindberg added another goal shortly after. Cehlin added two more goals in the 2nd period and broke the Norwegian tries.
The home team from the United States was supported by big crowd, but incomparable to the one which attended Canada-Russia game. Many Canadians remained at the arena to support Finland, so the power was quite equal at the stands. Despite that Finland outshot United States, the US team had more scoring chances in the game and it looked for a long time that US team would win the game. Pakarinen scored a very lucky goal early in the 3rd. He was fouled, moved a goalie Campbell out of his position and hit the puck well from the air. On the other end Ortio showed a fantastic save with his stick against Palmieri. He was already beaten but managed to stop the puck with putting his stick in the air in the last moment. This save would make highlights in any NHL season decade... Team USA finally scored the winner in overtime after a horrible mistake from the Finnish defence.
Tomorrow the Czechs and Slovaks enter the tournament against their opponent from Norway and Germany.
