No surprises when Canada beats Germany

Canada's first line lead by Ryan Nugent-Hopkins showed class when the Maple Leafs defeated Germany 9-3 on the opening day of the U20 World Championship in Ufa, Russia.
As expected Canada won fairly easy in their WJC opener against Germany. But Germany showed some good offensive skills and played a good first period despite many penalties. Xavier Oullet opened the scoring on one of the power plays and super star Ryan Nugent-Hopkins made it 2-0 halfway through the first. But the Germans didn't gave up and their star Tobias Rieder had an easy finish to reduce Canada's lead after a great pass on the power play by Dominik Kahun late in the first.
The Germans got a chance to tie the game with an early power play in the second but instead Mark Schiefele scored short handed after picking up a rebound off the boards from his own shot. After that it was all about Canada who scored three more goals for a 6-1 lead before they perhaps lost a bit of concentration as Germany scored two quick goals.
If they game wasn't already over it really was when Schiefele scored his second of the game with only two seconds left of the second period finished of a nice attack by the Canadian first line that was brilliant. Led by Nugent-Hopkings who had five points, Jonathan Huberdeau also picked up three points.
"I think we could tighten up a little defensively," Nugent-Hopkins said about Canada's openeder,"but I think overall we played a solid game. We gave them only a couple of high-chance scoring opportunities, and unfortunately they capitalized on them."
In the third period Canada added two more goals to make the final score 9-3. The Germans now quickly have to regain power after this hard game for another hard game against USA tomorrow while Canada has one day's rest before playing Slovakia.
