KHL Tuesday recap
08 Jan 2013 | Dennis Mende
A total of nine games were played in the league today. Slovan won in overtime despite last-minute regulation shock.
A lone goal by Igor Mirnov at 10:42 was enough to give Salavat Yulayev Ufa a 1-0 win over current Gagarin Cup holders Dynamo Moscow. In an even match guest goalie Alexander Sharychenkov left his net during the last minute of regulation but also with the additional attacker they couldn't force the equalizer anymore.
CSKA Moscow had far more problems than expected against outsiders Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg. Rastislav Spirko and Alexei Makeyev earned a two-goal lead for the guests already until 06:09. In the same period Sergei Gimayev cut the lead to the half before Vladimir Zharkov and Igor Radulov turned the game around for CSKA in the following 20 minutes. At 48:14 Stanislav Zhmakin let the game extend to overtime which stayed goalless. In the following shootout Oleg Kvasha gave the win to the home side in the fourth round.
Lokomotiv Yaroslavl earned a solid 4-1 win at home against Dinamo Minsk. Alexander Guskov - in power play - and Alexander Chernikov grabbed a 2-0 lead for the hosts until 07:20 that was answered by the guests through Dmitry Meleshko with the man advantage. Also in power play Alexander Guskov restored the two-goal lead for Lokomotiv, still in the first period. At 39:14 Yuri Petrov used another power play to make everything clear for Yaroslavl.
In today's match Atlant Moscow Oblast barely created opportunities and couldn't avoid a clear home loss against Severstal Cherepovets. Niclas Bergfors opened the score for Severstal at 02:16 with the first power play of the game. In the third period Mikhail Anisin - also in power play - and Ignat Zemchenko made everything clear for the guests.
Vityaz Chekhov earned a surprising away win against Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod. Evgeny Timkin and Pavel Chernov made it 2-0 for the guests until 21:46 before Alexei Vasilyev answered for Torpedo late in the second period. In the last minutes the game action was often interrupted by penalties on both sides. With a transformed penalty shot at 59:21 Alexander Korolyuk made everything clear in favour of Vityaz.
At home Ak Bars Kazan were able to stop a four-game winning streak by SKA St. Petersburg. Danis Zaripov and Kirill Petrov, both in power play, pathed the way for the home team's win in the middle period. Again Danis Zaripov decided the match at 43:45. Despite having far more chances SKA were only able to score the consolation goal at 54:31 when Tony Martensson was successful in power play.
Western Conference bottom side Spartak Moscow earned one of their very few wins this season by defeating conference rivals Donbass Donetsk at home. Despite a second-period guest lead through Vaclav Nedorost, the game was turned around in the last 20 minutes by Spartak through Anatoly Nikontsev, Branko Radivojevic and an empty netter by Oleg Petrov.
Also without their lockout stars Metallurg Magnitogorsk managed to have a great win on the road against Lev Prague. Mats Zuccarello, Ryan O'Reilly and Justin Hodgman grabbed a three-goal lead until "half time" before Jiri Hunkes answered for Lev. In the last 20 minutes Sergei Mozyakin restored the Magnitka lead before Jakub Klepis made it 2-4 with a shorthander. Still Yaroslav Kosov added another one for Metallurg with less than five minutes to go.
Michel Miklik and Andrej Kudrna made it 2-0 for Slovan Bratislava until 25:31 but guests Traktor Chelyabinsk came back with strikes by Valery Nichushkin and Vladimir Antipov in the following minutes. At 34:34 Jonathan Sigalet restored the Slovan lead. With 90 seconds left on the clock Traktor took a timeout and in the last minute they pulled out their goalie for an additional attacker. Often more a measure of desperation, it was the right thing for the guests who scored the equalizer through Konstantin Panov at 59:36. With their second shot in overtime, Slovan at least won back the extra point through Roman Kukumberg at 62:43.
