Women’s WC day 3: Record crowd and Swedish fiasco

06 Apr 2013 | Fredrik Pålsson

A record 18,013 crowd saw Canada secure first place in the first round. Russia and Germany to quarter finals while Sweden and Czech Republic plays relegation round.

In Group A as expected Canada and USA took the two semi final spots. Canada took their third straight win by beating Finland 8-0 in front of 18,013 a new World recored for women's ice hockey. Finland kept Canada scoreless for 14 minutes but Canada still managed to get a 3-0 lead before the end of the first period and the game was over. Megan Agosta-Marciano scored a hat trick for Canada.

In the other Group A game USA completely outplayed Switzerland and had 61-6 in shots on goal. USA took a 2-0 lead with two goals in the last minute of the first but only scored three more with Florence Schelling making 56 saves. Switzerland and Finland had no chance against the top teams and will now play Russia and Germany in the quarter finals. It's kind of sad to see that top two teams are still so much better.

In the B group Germany moved on to the quarter finals by beating the Czech Republic 6-3. Franziska Busch made two goals and one assist in a game when the Germans cruised to a 6-1 lead despite being outshot by the Czechs.

Sweden completed their fiasco by losing 0-4 to Russia. Russia dominated the game and scored two power play goals and an empty netter on route to the win. Sweden have never finished worse than seventh in Women's World Championship and now they will finish seventh or eight and will play the Czech Republic to avoid relegation. If Sweden is relegated there is delicate problem as Sweden is suppose to host the next tournament in 2015 (no WWC in 2014 due to Olympics).
