Iceland surprisingly defeat Australia, Belgium easily against Serbia, Croatia proves quality and showes power.
Australia - Iceland 2:3 SO (1:2, 0:0, 1:0, 0:0, 0:1)
Australia blew their chances against Croatia yesterday, and they're aware of that. Promotion is no longer reachable, especially not after giving up a point to Iceland. Hardly had 6 minutes passed in the game when Icland was up by two. At 4:51 Hedstrom gives Iceland the lead with two extra men on the ice. At 6:24 Maack doubles with the man advantage. Australians made some opportunities and reduced the lead through Todd on a powerplay. Twelve minutes before the end of the last period, Corstens brings the game to a tie.
Neither scored in the overtime period and the game was taken to game-winning shoot-out. The lone scorer, Emil Alengaard, brings Iceland the second point.
Serbia - Belgium 0:4 (0:1, 0:0, 0:3)
Although it may seem like it was an easy job well done, a hard fought win for Belgium today. Serbs were a tough team to beat until the last period. Not being able to keep up the tempo playing with only three lines, they conceeded three during the last three periods of play. At 14:04 Engelen broke the Serbian resistance for the first time, after receiving a great pass from Vincent Morgan into the middle. An evenly matched game, in which Serbs didn't lack quality, but rather physical readiness and a bit of luck.
In the third period, Ben Vercammen doubled the lead with three minutes passed. Six minutes later the Serbs were completely lost when Raekelboom found Joep Vercammen and it was about over already. Just to finish them off, Mitch Morgan scored another one with seven minutes to go to ensure, what seems to be an easy win.
"We started good and tough, didn't make all the shots but finished well in the end. I have to congratulate our goalie for his performance in the first period, we scored on our opportunities in the last twenty [minutes] and ensured our victory", Mitch Morgan said after the game.
Croatia - Spain 6:2 (4:0, 1:1, 1:1)
"Demonstrating power" - that could be the matchup between these two teams summed up in two words. Croatia came out strong, by the end of the first period they had 4 goals advantage.
Joel Prpich recorded 2 goals and 3 assists and he was the one to open the scoring. At 8:22 point number one came - Hečimović sent the puck upwards, he came out all alone and beat Sokolov. He picked the second goal when he scored shorthanded at 55:17, a highlight play - Prpich circled around the net and put the puck in the near angle and scored the game-winner.
Croatia's MVP, John Hečimović, was the most effective player for the team. 2 goals and an assist combined with his superb performance earned him the MVP award. He doubled the lead at 10:54, three minutes later Borna Rendulić made it 3:0. At 16:18 Hečimović scored second of the night on a powerplay.
In the middle period Sokolov made a superb save. A tip-in try for Croatia, Sokolov was outplayed but threw himself at the puck and saved the empty net with his stick. Spain was serving a team penalty for too many men on the ice when, at 27:56, scored shorthanded to reduce the lead. Short lasting hope for Spain, Michael Novak scores two minutes before second intermission.
Gonzales scored his second goal, and second for Spain at 46:17, again shorthanded.
"It's like that when you have a huge lead like we did. You try some things, hope for the best, some risky plays don't turn out like you wanted them to", John Hečimović explained.
